Women weeping in each others' arms. Grim faces. Frantic phonecalls. Lehman Brothers' 4,500 London-based employees learnt on Monday that the distressed US investment bank had filed for bankruptcy. They have lost their jobs, and may not even receive their pay cheques at the end of the month, let alone any redundancy money. The images of distress, as staff congregated outside Lehman’s shiny office in the heart of Canary Wharf, were poignant.

勿論、解雇手当もそうだ。

Yet little sympathy has so far been expended on the Lehman troops who followed veteran leader Richard Fuld into the Valley of Death. The prevailing sentiment seems to be that Lehman's overpaid bankers got what they deserved.
しかしこれまでの所、ベテラン指導者リチャード・ファルドに続いて死の渓谷に続いたLB兵士には、殆ど同情が寄せられていない。

The assumption seems to be that Lehman's staff of 20,000 worldwide consisted entirely of loadsamoney wideboy traders and smug investment bankers. In fact, at any investment bank, there is a wide variety of jobs.
リーマン・ブラザーズの世界中のスタッフ20,000人は、全員偉そうなトレーダーに傲慢な投資銀行マンだ、と思われているようだ。
実はどの投資銀行も同じだが、色々な仕事の人がいるのだ。
At the top of the tree - at least by their own reckoning - are the investment bankers who advise companies on their mergers and acquisitions, earning big fees when deals are completed. Their pre-eminence has been threatened in recent years, because prestige is derived mainly from how much money you make for the firm - and thus the size of your bonus. Proprietary traders who make bets using the bank's own capital and specialists who structure highly complex financial instruments and sell them to clients have risen in the pecking order, as they boosted banks' profits. Their activities are also more likely to be those which have got the banks into trouble.

And those holding the reins have done a spectacularly poor job of policing such activities. When appearing before the Treasury Select Committe, Lord Aldington, chairman of Deutsche Bank UK, was unable to explain what a CDO-squared was, despite the fact that his bank was active in that market.
また、このような活動を監視する、驚くほど薄給の仕事をしている人もいる。

Further down the hierarchy there are traders of varying seniority and research analysts who study companies and markets. Less glamourously, there are legions of so called "back-office" staff, who are responsible for processing transactions, as well as compliance officers, a sort of internal military police. There are also, of course, numerous other support staff, as in any big company, ranging from human resourses and public relations to secretaries and catering staff.

By no means all are earning megasalaries. The average salary at Lehman is around $330,000, industry numbers suggest. Given that Mr Fuld's pay package was as much as $40m, that means there are a lot of more modest earners. People who will now be unable to pay their mortgages and run their cars, unless they get another job in a very tricky employment market.
決して全員が超高給取りだったのではないのだ。

The economic downturn has some considerable way to run. Apart from it being in very poor taste, it may be bad karma to take pleasure in others' unemployment woes.
