Truancy in English secondary schools rose again this year with more than 200,000 pupils missing more than 20 per cent of their lessons - the equivalent of one full day every week.
20万人以上の生徒が授業の20%以上をズル休み（毎週丸一日に相当）する中、今年はイギリスの高校での不登校が増えた。
Figures from the Department for Children, Schools and Families showed there were 204,810 secondary pupils classified as "persistent absentees" - a figure arrived at by counting both authorised and unauthorised absences.
児童・学校・家庭省のデータは、高校生204,810人が「持続性欠席者」に分類されると示した。
これは許可された欠席および無断欠席の両方を数えて得た数値だ。
There were another 73,940 in primary schools and 4,020 in the Government's flagship privately sponsored academies.

These serial truants missed an average of one third of their week's lessons.

The truancy figures followed Conservative claims that the Government had ditched its official targets to tackle the problem. Ministers described that as "nonsense".

Children's minister Kevin Brennan said overall school absence, as opposed to truancy (unauthorised absence) alone, was falling, with only 7.76 per cent of lessons being missed, down from 8.16 per cent the previous year.

Headteachers said the rise in the recorded truancy rate showed schools were getting tougher on the problem.

Martin Ward, deputy general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: "The increase in unauthorised absences shows that schools are getting tougher on attendance by refusing to authorise student absences which are not absolutely necessary.

"It is a mistake to refer to unauthorised absence as truancy since this figure includes the many holidays taken in term time, which remains a major problem for schools," he said.

On average, secondary school pupils skipped 1.46 per cent of school sessions without permission over the course of the autumn term last year and the spring term this year, the government figures showed.

The was up from 1.41 per cent on the same period during the previous school year.

Mr Brennan said: "By law every local authority must have a local target and report to me about their performance in tackling truancy. We are actually intensifying our efforts by insisting that all local authorities get tough on persistent absentees.

Shadow Children’s Secretary Michael Gove said the Government had now dropped completely any national target for tackling truancy.

"The fact that truancy is now at its highest level since Labour came to power demonstrates how the Government have failed to get to grips with this rising problem. He said the Government should encouraging home-school contracts and give schools more power to enforce proper discipline. "The increase in truancy contributes to all sorts of other problems such as alcohol and drug abuse and youth crime, all of which are already on the increase," Mr Gove said.

Liberal Democrat schools spokesman David Laws said the Government’s "scaled down" targets were "shameful".
