The Saudi prince who is Citigroup's largest single shareholder has backed beleaguered chief executive Chuck Prince, dismissing $5.9bn (£2.45bn) of losses linked to the sub-prime crisis as a "hiccup".

シティグループ最大の大株主であるサウジアラビアの王子は、サブプライム危機関連の$59億の損失を「些細な問題」と片付けて、苦境に苦しむチャック・プリンスCEOを支持した。

"I'm backing the management of Citi," said Prince Alwaleed bin Talal in an extraordinary statement of support.

On Monday, the bank warned that it expects a 60pc slump in third-quarter profits after write-downs and trading losses, but the prince said that with the "hiccup" of third-quarter results out of the way "our journey with Citi will continue because we remain loyal".

同銀行は月曜、評価損と営業損失後、第3四半期利益は60%の減益を予測していると警告したが、王子は第3四半期決算の「些細な問題」は「我々が忠実であり続けるのだからシティと続ける旅」の邪魔にはならないと述べた。

"Citi's strategy to grow and cut costs such as reducing payroll is clear," he said, adding that the bank "has demonstrated outstanding record success in this year's first-half results."

Prince Alwaleed has in the past used his 3.6pc stake, held via his Kingdom Holdings investment vehicle, to affect change at the bank. His call for the bank to take "draconian measures" to control costs led to a 17,000 job cull earlier this year.

However, his current views echo those of Mr Prince, who believes that once the three months to the end of September are out of the way, he expects "to return to a normal earnings environment in the fourth quarter".

His statement says: "No financial institution is immune from the financial turmoil in global markets or its ripple effects."

Mr Prince is believed to be awaiting a review of the third-quarter numbers before deciding whether to make any changes to his senior team.

Analysts pointed out that neither Mr Prince nor Prince Alwaleed know the final details of the third-quarter losses which are to be unveiled on October 15.

In light of that, the Saudi prince's comments seem somewhat ahead of themselves, although it is known that he has spoken with Mr Prince.

彼がプリンス氏と話をしているのは知られているとはいえ、その点からすれば、サウジアラビアの王子のコメントは或る意味先走っているようにも見える。

Citi's surprise statement on Monday produced one of the most severe write-downs seen so far following the US home loan crisis. As well as its leveraged loans and fixed-incomes business, Citi's retail business is nursing a hangover as a result of the credit crisis, with the bank seeing consumer credit costs go up $2.6bn in the third quarter as a result of higher losses and higher charges to increase loss reserves.

月曜日にシティが出した驚きの声明は、アメリカの住宅ローン危機の後でこれまで出された中でも最も深刻な評価損の一つを生み出した。
レバレッジド・ローンや債券投資事業同様シティのリテール事業は、損失引当金を増やすために損失が増え手数料が増えた結果、消費者金融のコストが第3四半期には$26億にまで上昇した、信用危機の傷を癒している。

The bank's shares, however, have responded positively to the news, with traders taking the view with the bad news out in the open, the only way is up. Having hit a low of $45.30 in September, Citi's shares yesterday were up 24 cents at $48.10 in lunchtime trading, albeit off its highs of $55.20 in the early summer.

しかし、トレーダーは悪材料は出されたので後は上がるだけだと考え、同行の株価はこのニュースに前向きに応じた。
9月に$45.30の安値をつけた後、シティの株価は昨日、初夏の高値$55.20には及ばなかったものの、24c上昇して昼頃には$48.10となった。
