The world's leading experts on cyber-security and counter-terrorism have dismissed David Cameron's plan to tap encrypted data as unworkable in isolation and possibly a dangerous over-reaction.
世界屈指のサイバーセキュリティやテロ対策の専門家が、デイヴィッド・キャメロン英首相の暗号化データ盗聴計画など単独では上手くいかないどころか、危険な過剰反応になるかもしれない、と却下しました。
The Prime Minister wants the British authorities to gain access to mobile devices through a "back-door" in order to fight terrorist threats in much the same way that they can already intercept emails or eavesdrop on telephone conversations.
同首相が求めているのは、英当局が既に認められているメール傍受や電話盗聴とほぼ同じ形で、テロ対策のために「裏口」から携帯端末にアクセス出来ることです。
"Encryption is of fundamental importance. The path to Hell starts at the back-door. It compromises protection for everybody on everything," said Brad Smith, Microsoft's executive vice-president.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves of Estonia, a cyber-expert whose country was subjected to a crippling attack for 24 hours in 2007, said Mr Cameron's plan is pointless unless it is part of a co-ordinated global push by all the main powers.

Mr Ilves said the world is vulnerable to paralysing attacks at any moment.

"You can wreak havoc in all kinds of ways. Two years ago in Los Angeles the traffic system went on strike and all the lights went red: it was chaos. Imagine what would happen on the next level if they turned the lights green?" he told the World Economic Forum in Davos.

He said it is unforgivable for critical infrastructure plants to rely on outdated software systems that are "full of holes" and easily hacked. Much the same applies to ordinary users of the internet. "If you've still got Windows XP, you're in trouble. It's like Swiss cheese," he said.

Mr Ilves said "basic hygene" can avert much of the trouble from low-level hacking. "Don't create a file entitled passwords, that is pretty dumb,"

"The main threat that is really scaring me is attacks on critical infrastructure," says Eugene Kaspersky, head of Russia's Kaspersky lab and a legendary figure in the field.

He said the first line of targets are electricity plants, or worse yet, nuclear plants. "If you don't have power, nothing works," he said.

The next line is telecommunication hubs, then the banking and financial system. The world has the means to fight back, and can prevail, but he warned that organized crime groups are becoming extremely sophisticated and are able to crack almost any commercial defences.

"Unfortunately, my business is doing very well," he said, referring to his own cyber-protection services, now sought by CEOs from the Fortune 500 companies. He said the hackers had graduated from "bicycle" methods to "space shuttle" precision.

A typical low-level method is to target companies with a blizzard of spam that brings their business to halt. The goal is to extort protection money in a mafia-style operation.

Mr Kaspersky said the recent attack on Sony was different, however. The company left its flank open. "It was not a very sophisticated attack. The enterprise was protected, but it was not protected in the right way," said.

Jean-Paul Laborde, head of the UN's counter-terrorism directorate, said the alarming new development is the unholy alliance between terrorist cells and organized crime. "This was not the case before, but is now very clear," he said.
