Australia has stepped up its campaign against Japanese whaling by publishing "shocking" photographs of a slaughtered minke female and a calf.
オーストラリアは殺されたメスのミンククジラとその子どもの「衝撃」写真を公開して、日本の捕鯨反対キャンペーンを強化した。
The pictures, which have been splashed across Australian newspaper front pages, were taken from an Australian customs ship tracking Japan's Antarctic whaling fleet.

A gaping wound visible on the calf's side was apparently caused by an explosive-packed harpoon.

The Australian environment minister, Peter Garrett, said: "I guess when I saw the photos I just felt a bit of a sick feeling as well as a sense of sadness."

"It's very disappointing. It's distressing when you think that it can take up to 15 minutes after a harpoon actually hits a whale for the whale to die.

"It's even sadder when you consider there's a calf involved."

Scientists said the minke whale calf was probably less than 12 months old and still suckling.

Japanese whaling authorities said the photos were misleading and insisted that the whales were not related.

"They are not a mother and her calf as claimed by the media," said Minoru Morimoto, director general of the Institute of Cetacean Research.

He accused the Australian government and media of fostering "dangerous emotional propaganda" that could harm relations between Tokyo and Canberra.

Australia's newly elected Labour government wants Japan to end its annual whale hunt, and dismisses Tokyo's insistence that it is conducted for scientific purposes.

"This isn't about science. It isn't about research... they're calling it science but really it's killing whales," Mr Garrett said.

The Australian government has said it may use photographic and video evidence of Japan's harpooning of whales as evidence in an international court of law to have the annual hunt stopped.

The pictures were "shocking", said customs minister Bob Debus, but would help bolster a legal battle.

"They will help us to back up the Australian government's argument in an international court case, the details of which are still to be worked out, to suggest that whaling should be stopped," he said.

Norway plans to hunt 1,052 minke whales this year under its commercial whaling programme, the government announced - maintaining the level set in 2006, Greenpeace said the quote was higher than needed, with domestic demand for whale blubber falling in recent years.
