BP plans seven 'massive' projects this year but signals caution over market recovery

BP is bringing on seven "massive" projects this year in the biggest expansion the company's history but has brought down costs in a wrenching adjustment and is not banking on a recovery in oil prices this decade.

"We're planning the next five years with a $55 to $60 oil price," said BP's chief executive Bob Dudley. It is one of the most cautious operating forecasts in an industry where some are already eyeing a return to the glory days of triple-digit crude prices.

Mr Dudley said the company is finally moving beyond the disastrous Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It was forced to sell over $50bn of assets to cover the costs, including prime property in the Permian Basin of West Texas that is now selling for exorbitant sums.

BP is completing a huge gas project in the West Nile, as well as two new ventures off the Shetlands made possible by break-throughs in Seismic imaging. "We're coming in on time, and under budget," he said.

The expansion drive will boost the share of BP's revenue from 50pc to 60pc coming from oil over the next decade, but the company never gave up its 1000 wind turbines or its biofuel business in Brazil. Its BP Ventures arm is now pushing for a fresh leap forward into renewables and disruptive technologies. "We have a team scouring the world looking where to invest," he said.

It has just launched a joint venture with Fulcrum BioEnergy to convert municipal waste into jet biofuel, on the cutting edge of green aviation. It is investing in desalination, buildings that absorb CO2, solar thermal power, drought resistant crops, and liquid light, among other ideas.

Mr Dudley said the big oil companies must confront the fact that the world is moving ineluctably towards low-carbon energy under the Paris Agreement, and that means embracing carbon capture and storage (CCS) to anchor their own future. "There is a lot of work this industry needs to do. We can't just keep our heads in the sand," he said.

The BP-backed Oil and Gas Climate Initiative is funding CCS research at Imperial College London as part of a quest for "mini-Manhattan' projects that crack crucial technologies. Yet there are limits.

"Electric vehicles are going to be important. By 2035 there may be 100 million or even 200 million in the world, but there will also be two billion cars. I don't think we're all going to be driving electric," he said,

"The world is going to need every kind of energy. We can't just turn off oil and coal. What we do need to do is to tell our story better," he said.
