Dispatch: 75-year-old woman emerges from her makeshift shelter in a no-man's land that could become a de facto frontier between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed state of Novorossia
ウクライナと自称独立国家ノヴォロシアの事実上の境となる可能性のあるノーマンズランドで、75歳の女性が簡易シェルターから姿を現しました。
The basement has no lights, no heating, and no ventilation, but Nadezhda Voronina insists she is relatively comfortable.
地下のシェルターには光も暖房も空調もありませんでしたが、ナデーチャ・ヴォロニナさんは結構快適だと言います。
With just a pocket torch to light her way through the cellars beneath an empty holiday camp in the Ukrainian town of Shirokino, she picks out the essentials of life. A bed and blankets, tooth paste, salt, and some tinned food. The 75-year-old took refuge in this makeshift shelter when the civil war between the national army and pro-Russian rebels engulfed the area.
小さな懐中電灯一つで、ウクライナの町、シロキノにある無人のホリデーキャンプの地下にあるセラーを辿って、彼女は生活必需品を集めています。
ベッド、毛布、歯磨き粉、塩、缶詰を幾つか。
この辺りがウクライナ軍と親ロシア派反乱軍の内戦に飲み込まれた時、老女はこのような簡易シェルターに避難しました。
Since a ceasefire was agreed between the two sides on Friday, the guns have fallen silent.
金曜日に双方の間で停戦が合意されると、銃声は鳴りやみました。
On Saturday, Mrs Voronina was among the people of Shirokino emerging from their cellars, to assess the damage and figure out just who is in control of their town.
土曜日、被害を調べて町の支配者は誰なのか知るため、ヴォロニナさんは他のシロキノの人々と同じくセラーから姿を現しました。
She insists she was too old to be afraid of the intense shelling that drove her underground last week. But like many, she will continue to sleep in her shelter, just in case the ceasefire proves illusory and the fighting resumes.
彼女は、先週地下に避難する原因となった激しい砲撃を怖がるには歳を取り過ぎていると言います。
しかし多くの人と同じように彼女も、停戦が本物ではなく戦闘が再開した場合に備えて、シェルターで眠り続けるでしょう。
"It started on the fourth," she said. "First I was with the soldiers, then they left and I've been living here alone ever since.

"Once the roads are open my will son will come and get me and I'll go too," she said, surveying the damage.

Mrs Voronina is a gardener at Mayak summer camp, a children's holiday resort that found itself in the firing line. Like dozens of similar resorts that dot this patch of the Azov Sea coastline, Mayak usually plays host to the children of workers employed at in the factories of the Donetsk region.

Since the war broke out in April, however, Mrs Voronina has had the gardens largely to herself.
しかし4月に戦争が始まって以降、ヴォロニナさんは庭を殆ど独り占めしています。
The only guests this summer have been refugees from further North, hoping to wait out the war next to the shallow sea.
この夏唯一のお客は、浅瀬の傍で戦争が終わるのを待とうと考え、もっと北の方から避難してきた人達でした。
But when pro-Russian forces stormed into the town of Novoazovsk, 10 miles to the east, at the end of August, the refugees left.

"Everyone understood that it was time to leave. Something was going to happen," says Mrs Vonorina.

She, however, stayed ? only to witness the devastation of the camp where she has worked for several years.

After Ukrainian soldiers moved in to dig defences near the resort, the rebels zeroed their artillery on the camp with deadly accuracy, smashing through buildings, toppling trees, and shattering windows.

Shells came through the roof of the canteen and smashed the dormitories.

"See that? That's the work of our great, intellectual engineers who built machines in order to shell a children's camp," she said, surveying what was left of the southern wall of the canteen building.

"There will be no season this year or next year. Who on earth is going to rebuild all this?"

A little less than 24 hours into the ceasefire, the camp is tranquil once again. A semi wrecked armoured personnel carrier, a couple of abandoned anti-tank rockets the only sign of the soldier's occupation.
停戦から24時間を経ずして、キャンプは再び静まり返りました。
半ば破壊された兵員輸送車、打ち捨てられた対戦車ロケット2つだけが、兵士達がいた名残です。
The Ukrainian forces, who Mrs Voronina says pulled out after the first night of shelling, left behind a disabled fighting vehicle and stacks of unused mortar ammunition and mines.
ヴォロニナさんいわく、砲撃があった最初の晩が明けると引き上げて行ったというウクライナ軍は、壊れた戦闘用車両や未使用の迫撃砲や地雷の山を遺して行きました。
Their earthworks ? trenches, dugouts and foxholes on the surrounding hills are deserted. Many appear to have been abandoned almost as soon as they were occupied, the freshly dug bunkers devoid of the detritus of day-to-day military life that soldiers usually leave behind them.
ウクライナ軍が周囲の丘に作った塹壕、防空壕、避難場所は放棄されています。

On the last hill over looking the sea, a destroyed anti-aircraft gun lies amongst discarded ammunition. There is little sign of a direct hit on its dugout, suggesting retreating Ukrainians destroyed it themselves before withdrawing.

The vast fields and long straight roads of this area are a no-man's-land between Ukraine's army and the rebels who have carved out a territory that they call Novorossia, or New Russia.

On the other side of the valley, nervous pro-Russian gunmen ordered journalists away from their forward most position, where the cannon of a tank dug into a bank commands the view of the main road towards Mariupol.
谷の反対側では、ピリピリした武装した親ロシア派がジャーナリスト達に、銀行に大砲がめり込んだ戦車がMariupolへ向かう主要道路の風景となっている最前線から遠ざかるように命令しました。
Wrecked tanks can still be found and destroyed Ukrainian artillery pieces are still smouldering.
壊れた戦車も破壊されたウクライナの大砲の破片も未だあちこちに見られます。
But so far, on this southernmost section of the front line at least, the ceasefire appears to be holding.
とはいえ、これまでのところ、少なくとも前線の最南端では、停戦が続いている用です。
There is no electricity or mobile phone signal. Throughout the rolling fields of no-man's land, villagers are relying on their wells to replace failed mains water supplies.

But many soldiers are convinced that the resumption of hostilities is only a matter of time.

"This war is not over," a member of the pro-Kiev Azov battalion, which was involved in the fighting near Shirokino, told The Telegraph. "As long as there is occupied territory, we will have to fight. I am sure we will be at war again before long."

Denis Gavrilov, who organises civil defence courses in Mariupol, said many people did not have faith in the ceasefire deal.

"We already had a ceasefire in June. The result was 57 killed. That's not the sort of truce we want," he told AFP news agency.

Natalia, a 54-year-old professor staying with friends in Mariupol after fleeing Donetsk, said she would never return to the city while it remained in insurgent hands.

"It's impossible to trust them (the rebels), they are bandits," she said. "(Ukrainian forces) can only fight them and push them back. There is no other way."

Donetsk was besieged by Ukrainian forces for weeks, depriving the city of essential supplies and sending thousands of people fleeing, until the troops moved away in the face of a sudden rebel counter-offensive across the southeast.
反乱軍が突然南東部全域で反撃を開始したのを受けてウクライナ軍が撤収するまで、ドネツクは同軍に数週間に亘って包囲され、重要な供給を不足し数千人が避難することとなりました。
"I hope that the truce will last. If you had lived in my apartment during all these bombardments, you would understand how happy I am that there is a ceasefire," said Donetsk resident Vasyl.

He said he would be celebrating his 50th birthday on Sunday "if I'm still alive".

According to an AFP toll compiled from UN and government figures, the fighting has killed nearly 2,800 people since mid-April and forced at least half a million from their homes.

Around Shirokino, there is much unfinished business.

With separatist fighters in Novoazovsk still insisting they intend to take the port city of Mariupol, and Ukrainian volunteers saying they still intend to liberate what they see as Russian occupied territory, neither side is satisfied with the terms of the ceasefire.
ノボアゾフスクの反乱軍が引き続き港町のマリウポリを占拠すると言い張る中、ウクライナ軍の志願兵等も未だロシアに占領された土地とみなすものを開放するつもりだとしており、いずれも停戦条件に満足していません。
And that leaves Shirokino and its 1,400 residents, in an interesting predicament.
更にそれによってシロキノとその住民1,400人は奇妙な苦境に残されることになります。
If the truce lasts long enough to "freeze" this conflict, this patch of no-man's land could become a de facto frontier between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed state of Novorossia.
この紛争を「凍結」するまで停戦が続けば、このノーマンズランドは事実上のウクライナとノボロシアの国境になるかもしれません。
Neither side may be satisfied with the settlement, but other frozen conflicts in the former Soviet Union show that such a state of affairs can continue for years, if not decades.
どちらもこの調停に満足しないかもしれませんが、他の旧ソ連の例を見ると、そのような状態は何十年でないとしても何年間も続き得ることがわかります。
The territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia broke away from Georgia over 20 years ago and their status has never been settled.
アブハジアと南オセチアは20年前にグルジアから分離し、その地位は決して解決されていません。
Caught between the Ukrainians and the separatist rebels – but controlled by neither – Shirokino may find itself left to chose its own path.
ウクライナと分離独立を求める反乱軍の間に挟まれ（ながらもいずれの支配も受けていない）シロキノは、独自の道を選択することになるかもしれません。
