Then that O-jochu turned around, and dropped her sleeve, and stroked her face with her hand;
・・・ほのオナゴは、クルっと、こっちを向いて、袖を下ろして、顔をなでだら、、、ほ～したっけ、オメ、な、な、なんと・・・・！！



-- and the man saw that she had no eyes or nose or mouth,
・・目ぇ～も無ぇ～！鼻ドも無ぇ～！口゛も無ぇ～！！・・ど来た。

and he screamed and ran away.
ジッチは「ぎゃぁ～～！！」って　ぶったまげでハ～、逃げ出したわよハァ～。

Up Kii-no-kuni-zaka he ran and ran;
ジッチは　ぶったまげでハァ～、むさんこになって紀ノ国坂を はねで登った。

and all was black and empty before him. On and on he ran, never daring to look back; and at last he saw a lantern, so far away that it looked like the gleam of a firefly; and he made for it.
目の前は真暗でハァ～、何も見えねがったげんちょ、振り返ってみる度胸゛もねぇ～し、とにかぐ　はねだ、はねだ。ほ～したっけ、、なんだが、遠ぐの方さ、蛍の光みでぇ～な提灯を　めっけだもんで、ほっちの方さ行ってみだ。

It proved to be only the lantern of an itinerant soba-seller, who had set down his stand by the road-side; but any light and any human companionship was good after that experience;
ほの光は屋台の蕎麦屋の提灯だ！っつうのが　わがった。んだげんちょ、どんな明かりだって、今さっき、あんな　おっかねぇ～経験した後゛だも、どんな明かりだって　さすけねわよ！

and he flung himself down at the feet of the soba-seller, crying out, "Ah! -- aa!! -- aa!!!"..
ジッチは蕎麦屋の足下さ　でんぐれながら、『ああ！- -ああ - - ああ！！！』って言ってだら、

"Kore! kore!" roughly exclaimed the soba-man. "Here! what is the matter with you? Anybody hurt you?"
『これ！　これ！』と蕎麦屋も驚った。
『なんだ？なじょしただ？　誰がさ、やらっちゃのが？』

"-- Only scared you?" queried the peddler, unsympathetically. "Robbers?"
『驚ろがさっちゃ　だげが？』と蕎麦屋は　なんちゃねぇ～感じで訊いた。『盗賊にが？』

Not robbers,-- not robbers," gasped the terrified man... "
『盗賊でねぇ～、盗賊なんかでねぇ～』とジッチは　はっから・はっからしながら言った。

I saw... I saw a woman -- by the moat; -- and she showed me... Ah! I cannot tell you what she showed me!"...
『オレは見だんだ…オナゴを見っちまったんだ- -濠んトゴで- -ほのオナゴ、オレさ、、、見せだんだ……ああ！　何を見せだがって？、ほいづは言わんにぇ、ほいづは言わんにぇ・・・あ・・・なんかスケベなモノを見せらっちゃわけではねぇ～ど！勘違いすんなよ！・・・んでも、ナニを見せらっちゃがは、オレは言わんにぇ！！』……

"He! Was it anything like THIS that she showed you?"
『んだが！・・・んでも、まさが・・・ほのオナゴが見せだのは、こんなモンだったであんめな？』






cried the soba-man, stroking his own face --which therewith became like unto an Egg... And, simultaneously, the light went out.
と蕎麦屋は　わぁ～の顔を撫でながら云った- - したっけ、蕎麦屋の顔は卵みでぇ～に　ぺったらこぐなっちまった！！……ほして、明かりも消えっちまったんだしけハ。
