This is a story of friendship, deception, redemption and love. Ms. See tells a powerful story through lives of chinese women in a rural village where a tradition of foot-binding prevails. Although the culture and the society illustrated in this book are quite intriguing, the strength of this novel lies in story itself. Lisa See's writing style is just right. She keeps decency by not going too detail and avoids the overuse of jargons. This graceful book occupies a special place in my mind.
It describes a different culture and inevitably conflicts with my ethics but the issue dissipates when the story itself is compelling.
It broke my heart but could not put the book down.

中学高校で、本来の意味まで踏み込めないのも納得出来る。
悲しい話だが、著者の描写の仕方が素晴らしく、最後まで一気に読める。
友情と裏切り、後悔と贖罪、そしてその中をずっと貫いているのは深い愛という、日本語で書くと恥ずかしくなるような内容だが一読に値する特別な小説だ。
