Worldwide attention to and focus on Islam - the world religion practiced by a total of 1.5 billion Muslims globally today - has hardly ever been higher, yet, the level of interest is not always equalized by the level of knowledge and understanding about the actual and authentic principles of Islam. Rather, misinformation, misinterpretation and prejudice are frequent features to be encountered both in the media and international political discourse.
The Sheikh Ahmed Kuftaro Institution (S.A.K.I.) has hence long felt the need to provide a factual and accurate presentation of Islam to interested non-Muslims, and we are happy to announce the beginning of a series of Introductory Courses on the Fundamental Principles of Islam starting from november 4th 2007.
Courses will be conducted in English over a two weeks period, certificates will be awarded upon completion. The start up course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of relevant topics such as the concept of Concept of Monotheism, the life and work of the prophet Muhammed, the holy book (Q’uran), Islamic law (Shari’ah), and related topics. Further details are outlined in the attached information sheet for your convenience.

Introductory Course on the Fundamental Principles of Islam
Date/time: Start on november 4th 2007, Sunday to Thursday, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Location: Sheikh Ahmed Kuftaro Foundation (S.A.K.I.), Damascus
Curriculum:
1. Introduction to Islam (1st course*)
2. Concept of Monotheism
3. Prophethood and Messengership
4. The Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him]
5. The Books of God
6. Shari’ah: Islamic Law
7. Hadith: Sayings and Traditions of Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him]
8. The Results of Submission to the Will of God
9. The Spread of Islam
10. The Day of Judgment
*Note: Advanced courses building up on above introductory course will be offered at a
later stage. Invitations and curricula to follow separately.
Method: Classes are held in English language, lectures are followed by ample question & answer periods. One complete course consists of 10 sessions à two hours.
Attendance is mandatory for those wishing to acquire a certificate upon completion of the course.
Objective: Completion of the course will enable participants tounderstand the basic principles of Islam and its sources and allow you to follow and participate in religious and political discussions about Islam and its interpretations in a substantive way.
