Four employees of Rio Tinto being held in China are being detained for "stealing state secrets".
中国で逮捕されたリオ・ティントの社員4名は「国家機密窃盗」容疑で拘留中。
Stephen Smith, the Australian foreign minister, said he had learned that the men - three Chinese and one Australian - were being detained on suspicion of espionage.
オーストラリアのスティーヴン・スミス外相は、男性等（中国人3人、オーストラリア人1人）がスパイ容疑で拘留されていることがわかったと述べた。
Adding to the confusion, the Shanghai Securities News said the four executives were suspected of commercial bribery rather than espionage.
更に上海証券ニュースは、4人の幹部社員の容疑はスパイ行為というよりも商業的贈収賄行為だ、と伝えて混乱を深めた。
The incident comes amid high-stakes negotiations between the company and China over lucrative iron ore contracts. However, reports from China suggested that Chinese steel mills had backed down on their demand for steeper cuts in iron ore prices than those agreed with other companies.

The Shanghai-based China Business News said that the country had now agreed to an identical 33pc price cut to those agreed with Japanese groups. A Rio Tinto spokesman refused to comment on the report.

Stern Hu, the head of Rio's iron ore operations in China, is one of the people being detained.

The Australian Government insisted it was granted access to them as soon as possible.

"The Australian embassy in Beijing and our consulate-general in Shanghai have confirmed with the Chinese authorities that an Australian employee of Rio Tinto Australia has been detained," a foreign affairs spokeswoman said.
「在北京オーストラリア大使館と上海領事館は、リオ・ティント・オーストラリアのオーストラリア人従業員1名が拘留されていることを中国当局と確認した」と外務省報道官は述べた。
"We are seeking urgent consular access (and are) not yet able to comment on the reason for his detention."
「緊急に領事館による接触を要請している。彼の拘留理由についてはまだコメント出来ない」。
Relations between the company and the Chinese became strained last month when it backed out of a $19.5bn (£12.2bn) deal with the state-owned Chinalco, opting for a rights issue and joint venture with former suitor BHP Billiton instead.
同社と中国の関係は、国営の中国アルミとの195億ドルの取引を取り止め、株主割当発行と以前合併を申し込んでいたBHPビリトンとの合弁事業を選択した先月緊張化していた。
