Just three months ago, the 100m students, pensioners and small businessmen who buy shares in China thought everything was on their side.

Sitting in the street-corner securities shops with their flasks of green tea, they believed the banks who promised they had stayed clear of dodgy American mortgages, and the online tipsters who said the government wouldn't allow the markets to fall before the Olympics. The Shanghai Composite was at record highs, having multiplied its value six times over in two- and-a-half years.
自分達はアメリカの怪しげなモーゲージには触ってないよと約束した銀行と、政府がオリンピック前に市場を暴落させるわけないじゃんと言っていたネット相場師を、緑茶入りの水筒を持って街の証券会社に座り込む彼らは信じていた。
2年半の間に時価総額を6倍に伸ばし、上海総合指数は記録的な高さに達していた。
What a difference a day (or two) makes. Shanghai suffered its biggest consecutive two-day loss yesterday. In Hong Kong - where the same shares are often traded at much lower prices - the fall was even greater.

Trading in Bank of China shares were suspended: no reason was given, but reports say it is exposed to sub-prime after all - and is preparing write-downs of up to $4.8bn (£2.4bn).

Expert witnesses were particularly gloomy that Asia's economic strength would not after all give it the legs to outrun turbulence in America. "The economic prospect looks dim home and abroad," said Zhang Ling, a fund manager in Beijing.
結局のところ、アジアの経済力なんぞがアメリカの混乱をしのぐことは無理かも、と鑑定人等は特に陰鬱な様子だった。

Ordinary investors play by different rules, hoping the government will bail them out. "I'm not worried because I know China will help Hong Kong's stock market," said Michelle Man, a sales executive and small investor, even though she has lost half her money recently.

The government itself may not be so sanguine. The last bear market saw riots in Shenzhen.
大体政府そのものが楽観的じゃないかもしれないのである。

A survey last month showed 136m people have share accounts.
先月行った調査によれば、1億3,600万人が証券口座を開いたそうな。
