No doubt about it, there is something wincingly crass about Gordon Brown. His Freudian slip on Wednesday betrayed his conviction that he is single-handedly "saving the world".

The solution, of course, is to devise an international accord on fiscal policy. This is a job for the International Monetary Fund or the newly-ennobled G20.

One hopes they will step up to the plate.
