The gang that kicked a father of three to death in front of his family, roamed the streets drunk on cheap, strong cider and high on cannabis, looking for trouble.
安物で強い酒に酔っ払い、カナビスでハイになり、一騒動起こしてやろうと街をうろついていた不良は、3人の子どもを持つ父親を家族の目の前で蹴り殺した。
More often than not they found it.
大抵騒動は見つかった。

A teenage girl who was one of Swellings' victims said she lived in fear of being murdered by him.
スウェリングスの犠牲者の一人である十代の少女は、彼に殺されるかもしれないという恐怖を抱えて生きている、と語った。
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told how Swellings, 19, flouted the law and thought nothing of turning to violence.
法的理由により名前を出すことの出来ない17歳の少女は、どのようにスウェリングス（19歳）が法律を侮辱し、暴力をふるうことをなんとも思わないか語った。
She said Swellings - nicknamed Swellhead - threatened to kill her three months before he murdered Mr Newlove, and that he and his cronies had left her so terrified of him that she was afraid to go out.
彼女はスウェリングス（愛称はスウェルヘッド）は、彼がニューラヴ氏を殺害する3ヶ月前に自分を殺すと脅し、彼と仲間達が怖くて外出出来なくなったと語った。
"I hate him," she said. "He's a lowlife who deserves everything he gets, and now I want him to rot in jail.

"I just hope that one day he'll realise what a complete waste of space he is".

The teenager, whose father is a police inspector, criticised the Cheshire Constabulary for what she claimed was a failure to confront the gang head on.

"I think the police should feel ashamed of themselves. They could have prevented all of this," she said.

"It's so sad that someone has had to lose his life because people didn't do anything about Swellhead and his gang. It's taken someone to be murdered for them to sit up and do something."

She said Swellings had a restraining order that prevented him from approaching her after she gave evidence against him when he assaulted one of her friends.

He ignored it, chasing her into school and lying in wait. He warned her that he was going to "get her".

Three months later he punched her in the face, shouting: "That's the least you're going to get."

A week later, she said he and his gang beat her up. "He was kicking and punching me. He said he was going to kill me.

"That's what scares me the most now - that it could have been me that they murdered."

Her father, who works outside the area, said local officers were frustrated because they did not have "the time, the resources or the infrastructure to provide the support they would like" to residents.

Another of the gang's victims, Steve Ormerod, an electrician, was subjected to an identical attack to Mr Newlove the week before the murder in Warrington, Cheshire, last summer.

Mr Ormerod, who lived nearby, was knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly in the head outside his home after he went to investigate a disturbance.

Last night, he said: "It could so easily have been me that was killed. It's just luck that I survived.

"Two of them came towards me. They were quite threatening and went to punch me. I took a swing back and ended up on the floor.

"My head was down and they seemed to be running past me, kicking me.

He said he did not report the assault because "nothing ever happens when you phone with a report; there's no response".

The gang's numbers would fluctuate on any given night but its members seemed to gravitate around Swellings.
不良の数は夜によって様々だが、メンバーはスウェリングスを中心にしているようだ。
Most of them were younger and easily impressed by his love of drink, hard talk and mindless violence.

When sober, Swellings was prone to mild violence, but when drunk or high on drugs he became a monster.

In the hour before they killed Mr Newlove, they attacked two strangers at random.

A local teenager said: "He's always mouth, always cocky, always going out on the streets and getting drunk.

Another teenager said: "If Swellhead had been arrested earlier, none of this would have happened. He and the others were always fighting and stuff.

"It got worse when they were drunk. Without a drink they might just smash a window. But once they got bladdered and stoned they would think they were hard."
「酔っ払ったらもっと酷かった。酒が入ってなけりゃ窓を割るぐらいかもしれないけど。でも一旦ベロベロに酔っ払ったら、強いと思い込むんだ」。
Stephen Sorton, 17, who inflicted the fatal blow on Mr Newlove, was another notorious drinker.
ニューラヴ氏に致命傷を負わせた17歳のスティーヴン・ソートンも、やはり悪名高い酔っ払いだった。
On that night he downed around 10 bottles of Stella Artois and a three-litre bottle of cider.

The youngest of the convicted trio was Jordan Cunliffe who, despite being only 16, had a reputation for violence and troublemaking.

He was often left to fend for himself after his mother moved from Warrington.

Cunliffe preferred to stay behind in the house his mother had kept on and hang around with his friends.

The trio made up the nucleus of a much more disparate group.

Now local residents fear that despite the convictions, life is not likely to get much easier.
