David Cameron should be focusing on intellectual property not human rights

Human rights in China is an important topic but allowing the subject to overshadow the Prime Minister's trade delegation there is a mistake.

中国の人権は重要問題ですけどね、それで商売に支障が出るってのは本末転倒でしょ。

Although designed to play well back home in the UK, it will achieve little or nothing in China and simply risks turning what could have been a useful trip to open doors for British business into a diplomatic sparring match – one that will be brief and quickly forgotten. A waste.

国内受けはするでしょうけど、それで中国で達成出来るものは殆どない、つか、全くないでしょ。
英国企業にとって商売のチャンスになるかもしれないものを、さっさと忘れられる外交スパーリングに変えちゃうだけじゃん。
無駄無駄。

There are alternative times and places where raising human rights would be more appropriate and might actually get listened to.

人権問題を取り沙汰すのがもっと適切だったり、実際に耳を貸してもらえるかもしれない時や場所は他にあるって。

If the Prime Minister wants to look tough in the UK media while on a potentially dull trade trip there are other crucially important topics that need airing at the highest level and which might actually do us some good.

首相がつまんないものになりそうな貿易訪中の間も英国メディアでタフガイに見られたいなら、他に重要なテーマがありますよ。
最高官レベルの発表が必要な上に、実際僕らの得になるかもしれないテーマ。

Top of the list is theft by Chinese and other Far Eastern companies. As Sir Anthony Bamford, chairman of JCB, says on Tuesday: "The machine designs of JCB products have been copied on many occasions by unscrupulous Far Eastern competitors. The practice is now commonplace in many industries. It is just not acceptable that one company's R&D effort is ruthlessly exploited by another elsewhere in the world."

Sir Anthony has complained to Chinese premier Wen Jiabao but it should be Cameron doing the complaining.

A global fraud survey from Kroll published last month found reported thefts of information and electronic data have risen by half during 2010. The worst market for fraud, according to the multinationals that took part in the Kroll study, was China.

The World Trade Organisation has found against China and its casual attitude to respecting the fruits of the West's knowledge economy but the problem persists.

Pilfering our intellectual property is just one problem. There are others, some home grown. The terms of the export credit guarantee service provided by Government are inadequate compared with rival countries, putting our exporters at a disadvantage. They need improving and extending, particularly to smaller firms.

Exhorting UK companies to expand abroad is all very well but if they're tied up by regulatory and planning restrictions at home then they are being asked to fight for new markets with one hand tied behind them.

Scoring points for the Scotch whisky industry and our pig breeders is one thing but if the UK economy is really to see a rebalancing towards value added, high end technology and manufacturing then UK know-how like JCB's is our single most important commodity and the Government needs to start protecting it zealously.
