Goldman Sachs launches Middle East Investments fund

Goldman Sachs has launched a new proprietary fund to invest in select assets in the Middle East in a reversal of recent flows which have seen sovereign wealth funds from the region invest in western assets.

The fund is understood to have been started with an initial balance of up to $300m (￡160m), with the fund likely to increase in size as more investment opportunities are identified.

Goldman Sachs Middle East Investments, as the fund has been named, is domiciled in London and was incorporated within the last few months.

It is understood that the fund is being managed by the bank's well-established principal investments arm.

The focus for the fund is wide-ranging, but it is thought likely to major in financial institutions as well as energy assets, which are the region's strengths.
