Prince Charles reaches out to China Olympics

The Prince of Wales will declare a ceasefire in his troubled relationship with China by attending a series of high profile events with the country's ambassador to London and some of its leading businessmen and women.

チャールズ皇太子は、在英中国大使や中国の著名な財界人と共に一連の話題のイベントに出席することで、自身の中国との緊張関係における戦闘停止を宣言する。

After delicate negotiations, Prince Charles has agreed to attend an awards ceremony to honour the Chinese community in Britain, and in a rare overture of friendship he will do so in the company of the newly-appointed Chinese ambassador, Madam Fu Ying.

デリケートな交渉の後、チャールズ皇太子はイギリスの中国人コミュニティを讃える式典出席に合意し、珍しい友好関係の申し入れの中、彼は新任中国大使の傅莹夫人と共に出席する。

The prince is also hosting a lunch for a group of the country's "new rich". In what may prove a politically sensitive move, he wants to work with them in developing charity and "civil society" projects in China.

皇太子はまた中国の「新富裕層」グループのためのランチを主催する。

They are said to have been impressed by the work of the Prince's Trust and are hoping to use it as a model for their own philanthropic plans. The business leaders are also keen for Prince Charles to become involved personally.

The prince has hired a young Chinese member of staff on a fixed contract specifically to oversee his developing interest in the country.

Up to now, the prince's reputation has been for a coldness verging on hostility towards China's Communist Party leadership, in particular because of its rule in Tibet.

In his leaked diary of the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997, he wrote that the Chinese leaders attending were "appalling old waxworks".

リークされた1997年の香港返還式典に関する彼の日記の中で、皇太子は出席している中国首脳陣は「醜悪な古びた蝋人形」だと記した。

But in a potential breakthrough, he will devote all of today to a series of "China events". In the morning he and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit London's Chinatown.

His lunch party will include seven of China's richest people, including Zhang Yin, whose paper recycling business has shot from nowhere in the last decade to make her one of the world's richest women, with a fortune of £5 billion.

In the evening, the prince will accompany Madam Fu to the Royal Festival Hall for the Pearl Foundation Awards, a ceremony to honour Britain's Chinese community.

The drive to repair relations between the prince and Beijing is understood to be the work of both Sir Michael Peat, his private secretary, and Madam Fu, who was partly educated in Britain.

Sir Michael is thought to have felt that while the prince may have won popular plaudits for failing to attend two banquets with visiting Chinese leaders – President Jiang Zemin in 1999 and President Hu Jintao in 2005 – the disparity with the Government's positive engagement with the country was becoming glaring.

皇太子は訪英した中国首脳陣との晩餐会を2度欠席（1999年の江沢民と2005年の胡錦濤）したことで世論から絶賛されたかもしれないが、中国と前向きに付き合っていこうとするイギリス政府の姿勢との格差が目立ってきていた。
マイケル卿はそう感じていると考えられている。

''He didn't turn up to the banquets, and he can be stubborn," said one source. "The government is nervous – they have a good relationship with China but the future king does not."

「彼は晩餐会に姿を現さなかった。頑固にもなり得る」
と或る内通者が言った。
「政府はピリピリしている。彼らは中国と良い関係だ。だが将来の王は違う」。

Prince Andrew is a regular visitor to China in his role as Britain's trade envoy, but Prince Charles has only been to Hong Kong.

アンドリュー王子はイギリスの通商大使として定期的に中国を訪れているが、チャールズ皇太子は香港しか行っていない。

Madame Fu is said to have made it her aim to persuade the Prince to make his first visit and, if at all possible, to attend the Beijing Olympics next year.

傅夫人は、可能であれば、来年北京オリンピックに出席するよう皇太子を説得することを目標にした、と言われている。

The prince has been reluctant to appear in public with representatives of the Chinese government except when necessary, such as at the Hong Kong handover events, where many felt his unhappiness was all too apparent.

多くの人が彼の不満を感じ取ったもののあからさまにはなり過ぎなかった、香港返還式典といった必要な場合を除いて、皇太子は中国政府の代表者と公に姿を現すことを嫌がっている。

For Beijing there could be no better mark of the international status the Olympics are supposed bring to the country than for one of its best-known critics to attend.

中国政府にとっては、北京オリンピックが中国にもたらすはずの国際的なステータスを印すために、最も有名な批判者の一人が出席する以上のことはないのである。
