The United States has signalled for the first time that President Pervez Musharraf’s days in power may soon end.
アメリカは、ペルヴェーズ・ムシャラフの大統領としての寿命もそろそろ終わりかもしれない、と初めてほのめかした。
American officials have said that the White House is reportedly losing faith in General Musharraf’s leadership.
ホワイトハウスがムシャラフ将軍のリーダーシップへの信頼を失いつつあると言われている、とアメリカ当局者が語った。
Until now the general had been a pillar of Washington’s war against terrorism.
将軍は今までアメリカ政府のテロとの闘いの主軸の一人だった。
But almost two weeks after Gen Musharraf declared a state of emergency, the Bush government is said to be considering what to do in the event of an imminent end to his premiership.
しかし2週間近く前にムシャラフ将軍が非常事態宣言を行った後、ブッシュ政権は今にも倒れそうな彼の政権が実際にそうなった場合の対応を検討している、と言われている。
John Negroponte, the deputy US secretary of state, is arriving in Islamabad tomorrow and senior administration official have been discussing what message to deliver to the president and military leader.

Officials say they still hope that Mr Negroponte can salvage the proposed political coalition between Gen Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister.

Several senior officials said that with each day that passed, more of their colleagues were coming around to the belief that Gen Musharraf’s days in power were numbered.

Today a US diplomat in Pakistan called on Gen Musharraf to end emergency rule and resign as army chief after meeting the country's main opposition leader for two hours of talks.

The US consul-general, Brian Hunt, crossed barbed wire barricades to speak with Ms Bhutto in the residence in the eastern city of Lahore where she is under house arrest.

"Emergency [rule] should be lifted and restrictions on the media also withdrawn," he said after meeting Ms Bhutto.

Gen Musharraf was due to step down as army chief today, but he has extended his position and now says he will resign his military post in December.

He has promised to resign his army post once the Supreme Court validates his next term as the country's president.

Ms Bhutto said that she hopes to form a government of national unity to replace Gen Musharraf ahead of elections, and is contacting other opposition parties to get them on board.

Gen Musharraf may appoint a caretaker government today. Newspapers have tipped the chairman of the Senate, Mohammadmian Soomro, to become interim prime minister.

The former banker is a member of the ruling party and is unlikely to win a wholehearted welcome from the opposition who are demanding a neutral interim administration.

Gen Musharraf has promised elections by Jan 9 but the opposition say the poll will be a sham if held under emergency rule.
