3. War shrine visit reignites anger at Japan

Japan's prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, provoked fury in Asia yesterday when he made another visit to Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine.
日本の総理大臣小泉純一郎は、昨日、東京の靖国神社へ再び参拝し、アジアに怒りを引き起こした。

The Shinto shrine, which honours the country's war dead, including war criminals, is closely associated with the militarist ethos that pervaded Japan in the Second World War.
戦争犯罪人を含む同国の戦死者を祀るこの神道神社は、第二次世界大戦で日本に浸透した軍国主義精神と緊密に関連している。

The Chinese ambassador to Japan said the visit was "a serious provocation to the Chinese people that undermined bilateral ties".
駐日中国大使は、この参拝は「二カ国関係を傷つける中国人への深刻な挑発」だと語った。

South Korea's foreign minister, Ban Ki-moon, summoned the Japanese ambassador to tell him: "Mr Koizumi's visits to Yasukuni have been the biggest stumbling block to South Korea-Japan relations. Yasukuni enshrines war criminals who inflicted indescribable suffering and pain."
南チョウセンの外相Ban Ki-moonは日本大使にこう言う為に呼びつけた。
「小泉氏の靖国参拝は南チョウセン・日本関係における最大の障壁だ。靖国は表現言語に絶する苦しみと痛みを与えた戦争犯罪人を祀っている」。

In spring, violent anti-Japanese demonstrations erupted in China in reaction to the perceived whitewashing by Mr Koizumi and his government of wartime misdeeds.
小泉氏と彼の政府による戦時中の犯罪飛行行為を隠蔽すると認められる行為へのリアクションとして、春には、暴力的な反日デモが中国で勃発した。

Relations have remained strained since and the Japanese embassy in Beijing yesterday warned its citizens to exercise caution.
以来関係は緊張したままであり、昨日、北京の日本大使館は日本人に注意するよう警告した。

Mr Koizumi's visit was his fifth since becoming prime minister in 2001. Unlike previous visits, he did not enter the shrine's inner sanctuary and did not sign the visitors' book. He wore a business suit, rather than more formal Japanese dress or morning suit and later stressed that he visited as a member of the public, rather than as prime minister.
小泉氏の参拝は彼が2001年に総理大臣になって以来5度目。これまでの参拝と異なり、彼は神社の内側にある神聖な場所には入らず、記帳もしなかった。彼は日本の正装やモーニングスーツではなくビジネス用のスーツを着ており、その後、自分は総理大臣というよりは国民の一人として参拝したのだと強調した

Commentators noted that Mr Koizumi ignored a court ruling that his pilgrimages violate the strict constitutional separation of state and religion.
コメンテーターらは、小泉氏は、彼の巡礼は憲法の厳しい政教分離に違反しているという、裁判所の判断を無視したものだ、と指摘した。
