The following is the continuation of the previous chapter.
In terms of ideology, Japan certainly accepted Chinese thought and was influenced, but it is not necessarily true that Japan has no original thought.
If we have a reverse viewpoint, Japan will always escape under the influence of China, and we can see the process of forming our own ideological and psychological history.
Japan History of Ideas ‘to quit Chinese’
My new book that summarizes Japan History of Ideas · Geistesgeschichte from such a reverse perspective is ‘Why can only Japan escape from the spellbinding of China? Japan History of Ideas' to quit Chinese’ (PHP new book) I really wanted to make the subtitle ‘Japan History of Ideas to quit Chinese' the main title.
Japan that has the syncretism of Kami and Buddha.
Even though Japanese people are influenced by Chinese civilization and thought, they have tried to confront them from the beginning and create unique ones in Japan.
In the previous book I wrote that Japan has free refreshing attitude from the bondage of certain civilizations and ideas.
One example is Confucianism and Buddhism
These two ideas were transmitted to Japan through the Korean Peninsula almost at the same time.
However, in the Asuka - Muromachi era, Japanese attitudes toward Buddhism and Confucianism are completely different.
Especially in the Asuka and Nara period, Yamato Court made full efforts to create a Buddhist state.
Todaiji Temple and Great Buddha were built, and Kokubunji is arranged throughout the country.
Japan considers Buddhism as a power to protect and stabilize the state in Buddhism and has spread as a national religion.
However, against Confucianism it was very cold.
One phenomenon that Japanese scholars have not posed as a problem in the past is that it is a Japanese thinker before the Muromachi period and that no Confucian scholar exists.
Kukai, Saicho, Shinran, etc. are all Buddhist relations, but listing the name of the Confucian scholar how who will be isn't made first.
