そのうち、『「南京大虐殺」のまぼろし』（鈴木明著、二〇〇六年ワック出版より復刊）という本も出て、真実を知りたくなった私は雄松堂から出た『極東国際軍事裁判速記録』を買いました。

全10巻の百科事典のようなもので、本当は私はそんな物を買う義理はないのですが（笑）、とにかく買いました。　

そして南京に関する部分を丁寧に見て、「大虐殺などない」という確信を得ました。　

というのは、マギーという牧師さんが証言をしています。

この人は、イェール大学を出て南京にずっと住んでいた人です。

南京では日本が攻め入る時に、外国人たちが安全地区というものを作り、そこに一般の民衆も逃げ込ませていた。　

マギー牧師は南京の赤十字の責任者でアメリカ人です。

ですから、日本軍が入城してからも、南京のどこでも歩き回れる人です。

この人が証人台に立った。　

はじめのうちは、「あそこでたくさん殺されたそうです」「ここでたくさん殺されたそうです」と言っていた。

そのうち、アメリカ人の弁護士が、「それは伝聞証拠である。あなた自身は何人見られましたか」と反対尋問をしたのです。　

するとさすがに牧師さんだけあって、聖書に手を置いたりしているのでしょう、嘘は言わなかった。一人です」と言ったのです。

「どういう状況でしたか」とさらに弁護士が聞くと、「安全地区の境に日本の歩哨が立っていた所を、一人の中国人の青年が駆け抜けようとした。歩哨が止まれと言ったが止まらなかった。そして追いかけていって撃ち殺した」と証言したのです。

彼はこれしか見ていないのです。　

戦場で歩哨に「止まれ」と言われて止まらないで逃げたら、どんな兵隊だって撃たれます。ニューヨークに行って、警官に止まれと言われて止まらなかったら、今でも撃たれるんじやないですか。　

強姦についてはというとマギー牧師は、「ある空き家に行ったら、中国の女性と日本の兵隊がいた。私が行ったら、日本の兵隊はびっくりして銃剣を忘れて逃げて行った。私はその銃剣を拾って追いかけました」と証言しました。

このたった一件です。　

強姦する前なのか後なのか、単に話し合っていただけなのかすらわからない証言です。

しかも、銃剣を置き忘れるなどということは兵隊にとっては大変なことです。

それだけ、「やるな」ということを上から厳しく言われていたのでしょう。　

日本軍の略奪について聞かれたマギー牧師は、「空き家から日本兵が氷を入れる箱をかついで出るのを見ました」とこれだけを言ったのです。　

南京を自由に歩ける立場にあって、日本兵も外国人には手出ししないよう厳しく言われていましたから身の危険もない、そして赤十字の責任者で牧師です。

その人が見たのが、この三件なのです。

私は昭和十八年に旧制中学に入りましたが、その前年、まだ小学校六年生の時、近所の高等小学校二年生の

南京大虐殺の嘘　

私は昭和十八年に旧制中学に入りましたが、その前年、まだ小学校六年生の時、近所の高等小学校二年生の太田和男くんという男の子が、「日本の航空母艦は加賀も赤城も全部、沈んでいるんだってさ」と言ったんです。

この方が、戦後出された本『南京虐殺の虚構　松井大将の日記をめぐって』（日本教文社）の中に、南京の虐殺などなかったと書かれてありました。

それを読んで、やはりなかったのか、それならわかると思ったものです。　

当時、南京が陥ちたのは昭和十二年で、日本は景気は悪くないし、物も不足していませんから新聞も雑誌もすごく厚い。

そこには、南京が陥ちた話から戦争の話から詳しいことがたくさん出ています。

南京には日本の新聞記者その他、百人もの報道関係者が行っていますが、誰一人、虐殺などについて報じていません。　

それが戦後、東京裁判で突如、南京虐殺の話が出てきた。

東京裁判については進駐軍の報道規制によって絶対に批判できないため、あらゆるマスコミがその通り伝えました。

そして、一般の人は、そんなこをやっていたのか、と思ったのです。　

それが田中正明さんの本を読むと、なかったと書いてある。

私は、子どもながらに、南京が陥ちた頃の雑誌をたくさん持っていました。

当時、南京や上海には日本人が自由に行き来できていましたから、写真もたくさん載っている。

これはやはり、なかったのだろうと思っていました。

「田中上奏文」は偽書　

調べてみると、その文書は偽書だったわけです。

というのは、その「田中上奏文」の中で山縣有朋が会議に出席した話が出てきます。

しかし、田中義一首相の時は、すでに山縣有朋は亡くなっていますから、そんな話は嘘八百なのです。

田中義一は山縣有朋の一の子分ですから、親分が死んだことを知らないはずがありません。　

ですから、日本では全く問題にされませんでしたが、世界中にばらまかれ、しかも世界中で信じられたのです。

ルーズベルトも同様に、これを信じて、日本を潰さなければならないと思ったらしい。　

そんな中でアメリカと交渉をしたのが、先に述べた理由から東條さんでした。

ですから、東條さんは首相になった時、陸軍大臣でもあります。

それから内務大臣でもありました。

なぜ内務大臣かというと、治安維持のためで、つまり右翼も左翼も押さえることのできる人物ということです。　

東條さんは真面目な人ですから、アメリカとの交渉にあたって、昭和天皇の御意志に忠実に全力を尽くして和平への道を探りました。

しかし、アメリカは一歩も譲らない。　

最終的に日本は、これ以上は譲れないという乙案を出し、ここで話がつくはずだったのですが、これが突如、ひっくり返りました。

ハル・ノートが出されたからです。　

「ハル」というのはハル長官という国務大臣の名前ですが、この人が書いたものではありません。

実際は、ハリー・ホワイ卜という大蔵省の役人が書いたもので、彼はソ連のエイジェントでした。

スターリンから、とにかくアメリカと日本を戦争させろという命令が下ったのです。

ソ連はドイツにやられている。

最初の反乱である五・一五事件は犬養首相を殺していますが、この頃は国民もピンと来なかった。

戦前の左翼と右翼は、仰ぎ見るのがスターリンか天皇かの違いだけであって、北一輝も大川周明も、社会的プログラムでは共産主義者と本質的に変わるところがないのです。　

治安維持法は第一は右翼を取り締まるため、第二は共産主義者を取り締まるためにできたものでしたが、どちらもまだ大した勢力ではなかった。　

ところが、この共産主義と言ってもいい思想が、陸軍下級将校の中に入ったのです。

小学校四年くらいの時でしたが、ノモンハンでも日本陸軍は非常に強かった。

夏休みで川に泳ぎにいくと、その話ばかりしていました。

一人で五十機、六十機、敵の飛行機を落とす人もいたんです。

ソ連の数字も出た後の計算では、日本はだいたい千八百機、ソ連の飛行機を落としています。一方、日本は百数十数機しか落ちていない。　

戦車も日本は八百台、ソ連のものを破壊しています。日本のものは三十台くらいしか破壊されていません。

死傷者もソ連は日本の1.5倍近い数字です。　

当時はそんなことはわかりませんけれども、私たちは「勝ったー」と言って喜んでいました。ところが、戦後は日本は滅茶苦茶に負けたんだとそんな話ばかりを聞かされた。　

最近になってソ連の資料が出てきたのを見ると、やはり私たちが子どもの時に受け取った情報のほうが正しかったのです。

当時の画報などに有名な画家の筆になるノモンハン事件の絵が出るのですが、広い野原にソ連の戦車が何台もずーつと燃えている絵です。

それが本当だったのです。　

ゼロ戦の名前はまだ知りませんでしたが、シナの上空からアメリカの飛行機もソ連の飛行機も一掃したということは知っていました。　

その後、アメリカとも戦争が始まりますが、その感覚というのも子どもなからにわかるものです。

だんだん日本が首を絞められているなあと思っていました。

当時、ＡＢＣＤ（米英中蘭）包囲網というのが日本に対してありましたが、外国が日本に物を売らなくなった。

一番、売ってもらえなくて困るのは石油です。　

私が小学校五年生の時、日本の全権大使がインドネシアに行って石油の交渉をしたのですが、これがうまくいかなかった。

あれは夏休みに入るか入らないかの頃ですが、子ども心にも目の前が暗くなった感じがしました。　

飛行機があっても、石油がなければ駄目だということは子どもにでもわかります。

連合艦隊もどうするんだろうと思っていました。

小学校五年生でしたが、現在の国際関係専攻の大学生なんかよりも、当時の小学生のほうがよほど戦争には敏感でした。　

そして、最終的に十二月八日の真珠湾攻撃の放送があった時、皆、わーつと喜んだわけです。これでほっとした、という感じでした。　

三十年くらい前に文藝春秋の『諸君！』で、『ＷＩＬＬ』でも「ある編集者のオデッセイ」を連載している堤堯さんが編集長だった頃、同年齢の岡田英弘さんと対談をしたのですが、「あの時はほっとしたね」と言ったら、岡田さんも「そうなんだよ」と言っていました。

すると堤さんが、「えっ？」と言う。

戦後、真珠湾攻撃が始まったことで「これで日本は終わりだと思った」などと言う人がたくさんいたからでしょう。

最近になって、ようやく有名人の日記などに「ほっとした」と書いている人が多いことがわかってきました。　

ずっといじめられて、いじめられて、日本はどうしようもなくなった、というのが、当時の私の印象です。
