「こんにちは」とATM / "Hello" and the ATM

僕は、引っ越して来たこの集落が好きです。
誰とでも「こんにちは」と挨拶が返ってくるのが好きです。
以前、住んでいた街では味わえなかった事です。

天然の良港に恵まれ、平安時代から交易の一大拠点として栄え、
全国から船や商人が集まったからでしょう。
“よそ者” の僕を、興味深く、優しく迎えてくれます。

元々、見知らぬ人と挨拶を交わすのが好きな僕は、
道で会う人、誰彼かまわず、笑顔で挨拶を楽しんでいます。
病気で弱っていた身体には、とても良い “薬” です。

そんな集落で、たった一台の ATM での出来事です。
この地区でも、海外から仕事で来日している人は多く、
その ATM は、都市部よりも英語をよく喋っています。

折角なので、最近は、僕も英語を使って操作しています。
最初は何と言っているのか分からなかったのですが、
最近は、少しずつ “会話” ができる様になりました。

そんなある日、年輩の女性がやって来ました。
僕が “英語” で会話をしている様子を見ていたので、
僕は確信しました。

きっと、彼女は僕の事を “異邦人” だと思っている筈だと。
だから、ATM が最後に「サンキュ」と喋った後、
思いっきり日本語で 「こんいちは、お先でした」と挨拶しました。

その時の、目を丸くして、僕を見つめた彼女の顔は忘れられません。
こんな風に、人々との挨拶や会話のある生活で、
以前よりも、少しずつ元気を取り戻しています。

 

I like this village where I moved. I like how everyone greets me back with a "hello."
This is something I never experienced in the town where I lived before.

This is probably because the village is blessed with a good natural harbor and has long flourished as a major trading hub, attracting ships and merchants from all over the country. Even though I'm a "stranger," they are interested and warmly welcome me.

I've always liked exchanging greetings with strangers, so I enjoy smiling and greeting everyone I meet on the street. It's a very good "medicine" for a body that has been weakened by illness.

This happened at the only ATM in this village. In this area, many people come to Japan from overseas for work, and the ATM speaks more English than in urban areas.

Since I have the opportunity, I've been using English to operate it recently. At first I didn't understand what they were saying, but recently I've been able to "converse" little by little.

One day, an elderly woman came by. As she had seen me conversing in "English",
I was convinced. She must have thought of me as a "foreigner". So after the ATM said "Thank you" at the end, I greeted her in perfect Japanese, saying "Hello."

I will never forget the look on her face as she looked at me with wide eyes. 
Living a life like this, where I can greet and converse with people,
I am slowly regaining my energy.
