図書館から借りた英語の参考書(一週間程前に既に返却したので本のタイトルは覚えていません)に覚えたい表現が幾つかあり、その一つが "When push comes to shove, the government will bail out the major banks." の "When push comes to shove" (いざとなったら)ですが、3月27日のThe Japan Times Onlineに次ぎのような実例が出てきました。
When push comes to shove, can Japan shoot down missile?
As tensions mount over North Korea's plan to launch a rocket, so, too, are doubts about the effectiveness of Japan's ballistic missile shield, which has never been used in a real-world situation.
間違えても日本に北朝鮮のミサイルが落ちてきては困りますが、自衛隊の装備が本当に機能するのかどうかも知りたい気がします。
