CamusのTHE OUTSIDER、Part One の第3章に出てきた表現です。
A bit later he'd found 'a pawn-ticket' in her room which showed that she'd pawned two bracelets. Until then he hadn't even known these bracelets existed. 'I could tell that there was some deceiving going on. So I left her. But first I hit her. And then I told her a few home-truths.
最後に出てきた単語 "home-truths"の意味が分からないのですが、 "home-" が丁度行の終わりにあり、ハイフンが付いているので、 "home-truths" なのか "hometruths" のスペルのどちらが正しいのか分かりません。 しかし、辞書ではどちらのスペルの単語では載っておらず、 "home truth" あるいは "home truths" で載っていました。
・Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary: an unpleasant fact about someone or something -- usually plural -- She was all ready to tell him some hard home truths. -- The doctor told me the home truths about the dangers of smoking.
・Cambridge Dictionary Online: a piece of information which is not pleasant or wanted, but is true: He decided it was time to tell her a few home truths.
・Cambridge Idioms Dictionary: if you tell someone a home truth, you tell them an unpleasant fact, usually something bad about themselves (usually plural) It's time someone told that boy a few home truths about his behaviour.
たしかに、自分の欠点など真実であっても人に指摘されるのは余り嬉しい事ではないですね。
また、今度の福島原発事故で "home truths" がどんどん出てきたら恐ろしいです。
