記事の内容からすると上の "prides" はライオンの事を指しているとしか考えられません。 "prides" に私の知っている以外の意味があるに違いありません。 辞書を見ます。

何でライオンの群れだけを指すのに "pride" が出てきたのか気になりますが、Etymology Dictinaryにも次の事しか書かれていませんでした。
First applied to groups of lions late 15c., but not commonly so used until c.1930.
ライオンは王者の誇りを持っているからと覚える事にしよう。
