レノボ（Lenovo）と言う会社をご存知でしょうか？ 元IBMのパソコン部門の事業をそっくり買収し、元々はIBMのパソコンであるThinkPadをLenovoのブランドとして製造販売している中国の企業です。そのレノボが来年の北京オリンピックで聖火を運ぶ三人のリレーランナー（torchbearer）を世界中のNew Thinkerから選ぶと言う話を知りました。
マラソンやジョッギングをする私としてはその候補に是非立候補したいところですが、私はthinkerと言うよりどちらかと言うとsinkerで、つい最近購入したPCもLenovo製品ではなくDellなのでと夢想をしましたが、候補者選びは６千人の申込者から１８人の最終候補者が既に選ばれ、その最終候補者のそれぞれの動画によるアピールを見た世界中の人の投票により誰が相応しいか選ぶ最終段階と分かりました。
その１８人の候補者のアピールは http://newthinkers.lenovo.com/ で英文およびYouTubeによる動画で見ることができると聞いたので早速見ましたが、各アピールは３０秒程度の動画ですが各人各様で中々面白く、色々な英語も聴け（日本の候補者も二人います）、英語の勉強にもなります。

英語の "subscribe" にはご存知のように有料、無料を問わず雑誌やメルマガなどの定期刊行物を購読する（無料の場合にこの「購読する」を使うことには未だに違和感を感じてはいるのですが。同じ事を "beef" の話題の時にも言いましたね。同じ事を何度も繰り返すのは歳を取った証拠と自覚はしておりますが、英単語を覚えるには繰り返し無理やりでも使うしかない。）場合に使われますが、「購読する」 以外にも意味があることを次の文で知りました。

この "subscribe to" は単なる主張ではなく、何らかの体系化された理論や考え方に対して賛成・同意することを指す、と説明がありました。 なじみのある単語なのに自分の知らない意味で使われているのを知ると最近は何か得をしたように感じるのは恐らくブログを書いているからでしょう。
うっかりと間違ったことを言ってしまう、あるいは失言をしてしまうのは潜在的に出てしまう本心なのだと心理学者のフロイドが唱えた事から "Freudian slip" と言うのですが、その Freudian slip をもじって、また駄洒落を交えたジョークがRDの Oct.2006号にありました。
A Freudian slip is when you say one thing, but mean your mother.
"mother" は "another" もじったのでしょう。
つい先日の新聞の見出しに "Miyazato bests bumbling Oyama" とありました。
良く知っている形容詞、副詞、名詞ではなく動詞の用法なので、英英辞書を引くと：

とあり、例文として:

が載っておりました。
英語って簡単な言葉でも知らない事が次から次に出てきます。

最近人里に熊が出没する事が頻発している様です。 熊に出会ったら、慌てて走り出してはいけないと聞いたことがありますが、何故だか知っていますか？

今日は午後７時に帰宅できたので夕食前にジョッギングをしましたが、途中の３箇所で金木犀（fragrant olive）の香りがしました。 敬老の日にジョッギングをした時には今日の３倍の距離を走ったのですが金木犀の香りはしなかったので、恐らく昨日か今日、金木犀が一斉に開花を始めたのでしょう。
今年の夏は天候のせいか、関東では毎年良く目立つ夏の花木の西洋キョウチクトウ（oleander）、ムクゲ（rose of Sharon）、サルスベリ（crepe myrtle）の花がどこも元気がなかった。
金木犀の香りは余り長く続かないと思うが、しばらくはジョッギングの楽しみが増えた。
前回のPop Phraseでも触れた "get a life" と言うフレーズは大分昔ですが "Saturday Night Live"（これはコメディー番組ですがsitcomではありません。NHKのサラリーマンNEOのようなスタイルのコメディです。）でポピュラーになった台詞で、NEET にピッタリの言葉です。 長くなりますが、英辞郎、英英辞書、Wikipedia の説明を以下に引用します。

"misogyny" の反対語（antonym）は "philogyny" （love of women、女好き）で、例文は：

"philogyny" の対語は調べたが分からなかった。 世の中には "philogyny" ほど "love of men" の女性はいないのかも知れない（？）。
単語に "ly" が付くと直ぐに副詞か形容詞だと思うのですが次の文の "orderly" は明らかに名詞ですね。
