hang-up

RD4月号のネイティブがよく誤る語法の特集 "How to Sound Smarter - The Reader's Digest Version of those rules for talking and writing - the ones you missed in school" から取り上げる最後の表現です。
You never mean: Everyone has their grammar hang-ups
You always mean: Everyone has his or her grammar hang-ups
Why: Everyone, everybody, and close cousin each are singular, so words that refer to them should also be singular. Or, since we all have our grammar hang-ups, you could just rephrase the sentence.

"hang-up" の意味が引っかかるので辞書を見ます。

"Even native speakers have grammar hang-ups." なので我々が分からない事だらけなのは当然ですね。

pickle

The Japan Times Online, Jan. 21のタイトルです。
DPJ drawn into Mr. Ozawa's pickle
"pickle" とは面白い表現ですね。　記事を読みます。
The arrests have plunged the Hatoyama administration and the DPJ into the biggest crisis since the DPJ-led administration came to power four months ago. In fact, the latest survey by Kyodo News shows that for the first time since its inauguration, the Cabinet's approval rating (41.5 percent) is lower than its disapproval rating (44.1 percent).
小沢氏の政治資金に関するスキャンダルの話ですね。"pickle" を辞書で見ます。

・Dictionary.com: Informal. a troublesome or awkward situation; predicament: I was in a pickle after the check bounced.
いずれも頭に "informal" がついています。　今回のスキャンダルの中でマスコミが使う「関係者からの情報」云々も取り上げられましたが、英字新聞で使われる英語は辞書で "informal" とされている言葉が結構多用されているので何をもって "informal" なのか疑問です。

pass

"The Old Man and the Sea" を読み終わったので図書館から借りたもう一冊 Agatha Christieの "Murder in the Mews" を読み始めたのですが読み始めて直ぐに前に聞いた事がある話だと感じました。自分のブログを見たら昨年の６月に読んだ本である事が分かりました。小説のタイトルはほとんど記憶していなかったので同じ本を借りたのでした。　そこでO. Henry短編集の昨年の読み残りの半分を再び読むことにします。 O. Henryの短編集には詐欺師の話が幾つかありますが "Jeff Peter as a Personal Magnet" もその一つで次ぎの文はそこからです。
"'I do feel some little better, Doc,' says the Mayor, 'damed if I don't. Now state a few lies about my not having this swelling in my left side, and I think I could be propped up and have some sausage and buckwheat cakes.'
"I made a few passes with my hands.
"'Now,' says I, 'the inflammation's gone. The right lobe of the perihelion has subsided. You're getting sleepy. You can't hold your eyes open any longer. For the present the disease is checked. Now, you are asleep.'
詐欺師が病気の市長に手で何かをしたようですが、"I made a few passes with my hands." の "pass" を辞書で調べます。

"pass" にこんな意味があるなんて面白いですね。

bridge

O Henry短編集の２番目の話 "Tobin's Palm" はさっぱり分かりませんでした。知らない単語が幾つも出てくるので一々単語を辞書で引くのですが、それでも意味が分からないところが続出です。（O Henryはなまりを表現するのに標準ではないスペルを使うのも難しく感じる原因の一つですが）　この話はまた後でじっくり読むことにしましたが、次ぎの単語の意味だけは覚えられそうです。
A long man he was, dressed decent, with a segar between his teeth, and I saw that his nose made two twists from bridge to end, like the wriggle of a snake.
上の文の男は眼鏡をかけている訳ではないので "bridge" は鼻の一部に違いありません。　辞書を見ると：

・American Herritage Dictionary: The upper bony ridge of the human nose.
確かに鼻の上の部分は触って診ると硬いですね。

自動車を運転するようになったので交通標語にも注意が向くようになりました。

English Collection過去の投稿リスト No.601-No.700（http://kakabane.hp.infoseek.co.jp/EC_601-700.htm）を作成しました。 以前は投稿リストをワード作っていたのですが、リストもWebに載せる事を意識して、最近はエクセルで作成しているので、つい先日８００回目の投稿をしましたが、No.701-No.800のリストは日付にハイパーリンクを付ければできあがりなので作業は非常に楽になりました。

jury-rigged

リーダーズダイジェスト７月号に掲載のOne Giant Leapと題した人類が初めて月面に降りた宇宙飛行士達の秘録記事です。
The first sign of trouble appeared when Houston's Mission Control lost radio contact with Eagle. The engineers jury-rigged a solution by patching communications from Eagle to Columbia (orbiting with Collins at the controls) and then to Houston.
"jury-rigged" とは何でしょう？"jury" は最近話題の裁判員制度（cf. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/142928）でも御馴染みの単語ですし、"rigged" は談合で使われる　"bid-rigging" を連想しますが、"jury-rigged" となると初耳ならぬ'初目'なので辞書を見ます。 　"jury-rigged" でも意味を掲載している辞書も少しはありますが、　"jury-rig" が元の表現の様なので "jury-rig" で引き直します。
Dictionary.com:　noun 1. Nautical. a temporary rig to replace a permanent rig that has been disabled, lost overboard, etc.; 2. any makeshift arrangement of machinery or the like.
?verb (used with object) 3. to assemble quickly or from whatever is at hand, esp. for temporary use: to jury-rig stage lights using automobile headlights.
4. Nautical. to replace (a rudder, mast, etc.) with a jury-rig: We jury-rigged a fore-topmast after the storm had snapped ours off.

"jury" の意味は陪審員とか審査員の意味だけしか知らなかったのですが、臨時のとか応急のような意味があるのでしょうか？ "jury" を辞書で確かめます。

American Herritage Dictionary: Intended or designed for temporary use; makeshift: a jury sail.
なるほど、「仮の」、「一時しのぎ」の意味がありますね。
若い頃、博多湾でヨットで遊んだ事があるのですが、沖合いでラダーのピンが折れて舵が利かなくなり、ロープでなんとか舵を押さえて数時間かけてやっと岸にたどりついた怖い経験を思い出しました。

２年ほど前に "Honeymoon Salad"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2007/07/2) を紹介しましたが、その時は７月６日がサラダ記念日と言うことを知りませんでした。　明日は、サラダ記念日だそうなので、サラダのジョークを紹介します。
"There was salad for school dinner, so how did they say grace?"
"Lettuce pray."
私は食べ物に関するジョークを見つけた時は、「頂きます」と言うことにしています。

palindrome

「新聞紙」と「遠く鳴く音」の共通点が何か分かりますか？　ヒントは「竹藪焼けた」です。もう分かりますね、前から読んでも後から読んでも同じ回文です。英語で回文のことを何と言うのか "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" にありました。
Pop is also a palindrome, a word spelled the same way forward and backward, like mom, wow, or Bob (which I'll later argue is the poppest name of all).
"palindrome" の説明としてOneLook Dictionary Quick Definitionには "a word or phrase that reads the same backward as forward" とありました。
単語ではなく文章の"palindrome" 例は：
"I'm Adam." or "Poor Dan is in a droop." がDictinary.comに出ていました。

racket

前回出したクイズ "Three of a kind" の答えです。
解答： 1) charges 2) showers 3) rackets
問題３）は解答を見ても Tennis player が使うracketsしか知らなかったので分かりません。そこで rackets を辞書で引くと（今回はdictionary.comからの引用です）：
1. a loud noise or clamor, esp. of a disturbing or confusing kind; din; uproar: The traffic made a terrible racket in the street below.
2. social excitement, gaiety, or dissipation.
3. an organized illegal activity, such as bootlegging or the extortion of money from legitimate business people by threat or violence.
4. a dishonest scheme, trick, business, activity, etc.: the latest weight-reducing racket.
5. Usually, the rackets. organized illegal activities: Some say that the revenue from legalized gambling supports the rackets.
なるほど、1、2はnoisy partyに 3、4、もMafia ringに関係しますが、5はMafia ringそのものですね。

malapropism

Freudian slipと同様に言葉の滑稽な誤用（特に発音が似ている２語の混同）に"malapropism"があります。 Mrs. Malapropと言うそそっかしい婦人が度々似た言葉を誤って使ったことから名付けられたそうです。
A malapropism is so called after Mrs. Malaprop, a character noted for her amusing misuse of words in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy The Rivals.
