Stephanie Meyer, author of "The Twilight Saga," claimed in an interview that this book was her best written work and the most important story she had told so far. I have never read Twilight series, although I know how poplar the books are. II believed that they were for teenage girls. However, she also mentioned on another occasion that she did not believe in categorizing books or placing under certain sections in a bookstore, implying try books without prejudice. I had to acquiesce in the comment. Nonetheless, the New York Times explicitly stated that the Host targeted new audience. It seemed that the book was destined to come here.
First of all, the book is a page turner. Even though some say this is an SF just because aliens are involved, I disagree. This book is not about science nor fantasy. It is about a naive question, what constitutes humanity and what is life. It made me ponder several questions. "D’ou Venons nous? Que sommes nous? Ou allons nous?" (Painting below)
The novel contrasts Melanie Stryder and Wanderer. One is physically strong and mentally tough while the other is benevolent and fragile. Melanie refuses to surrender after becoming a host for the alien soul who can only survive as an altruistic parasites. The species that Wanderer belongs to transforms even the society of their hosts into a paradise.
I was intrigued by the unfamiliar world Ms. Meyer created. The plot shone when the love triangle involving just two bodies emerged. It might sound weird but it was transcendently romantic. The fabulous conclusion provided an adequate closure, leaving the door open to potential sequels. The endearing characters in the book fascinated me. I am not ready to let them go. I hope Ms. Meyer has also fallen in love with them so that we could read another story of Wanda someday.

これは、読まない手はない。
読み終わった時に宇宙人を好きになっている自分に気づき少し異様に感じたが、気持ちが温かくなったのも事実である。本で問いかけられているのは、「人間性とは何か？」である。それも地球外生物が、何をもって人間って言うのだろうという疑問を持つという一見ややこしい話である。その上、体が二つしかないのに、心が三つあって恋愛の三角関係になってしまうのである。とても奇妙な状況だがとてもロマンチックなのだ。登場人物をすぐ好きになったので感情移入が容易だった。結末も丁度いい。一つの達成感があって、なおかつ続編が作れるような適度な終わり方である。作者がはっきりとこの本は stand alone だと言っているが、このままキャラクターと分かれたくないとも言っている。続編が出るのを是非期待したい本である。おまけだが、Twilight も読み切ることにした。
