*'Mr. Turner'と'Effie'、そして'Mr. Holmes'*

今年の秋に英国で公開予定となっている映画'Mr. Turner'。
英国を代表する稀代の画家の伝記映画は、ともすれば意外だが、本作が実質的に初めてである。

こちらが映画の予告編。

個人的には20代半ばに描かれた若き日の肖像画の引き締まった印象がどうしても強かったため、最初に予告編を観たときにはこのやや冴えない人物像に一瞬目を疑った。

参考までに、老齢のターナーを描いた作品を一点（こちらの方が映画のイメージに近いか）。

ターナーのイメージというのは、日本においては印象派の先駆けという文脈で捉えられることが多く、なかなか画家人生の全体像まで目が行き届くことは少ない。

それはある意味本国イギリスでも同じである。
典型的なのがラスキンの「焼却事件」。

ターナーの死後、画家の遺品を整理していたラスキンは大量の裸婦像を見つけてしまう。
これが明るみに出たら「偉大なる風景画家」としてのターナー像が崩れてしまうと危惧したラスキンは、それらを焼却処分してしまったといわれる。

ラスキンは書簡でこう述べている。

I am satisfied that you [Ralph Nicholson Wornum] had no other course than to burn them, both for the sake of Turner's reputation (they having been assuredly drawn under a certain condition of insanity) and for your own peace. And I am glad to be able to bear witness to their destruction and I hereby declare that the parcel of them was undone by me, and all the obscene drawings it contained burnt in my presence in the month of December 1858.

ターナーの〈虚像〉を作り出したラスキンの悪名高い焼却事件は、しかし、近年の研究によると、起こっていなかったともいわれる。

ともかくも、これまで隠されてきた〈実像〉が、映画でどこまで明かされているのか。
気になるところではある。

美術関連の映画でいえば、もうひとつ気になるのが'Effie'。
ダコタ・ファニング主演のこの映画では、ラスキンとその妻エフィー、そして画家ミレイの三角関係が描かれる。

エマ・トンプソンの脚本の著作権の問題でいろいろと揉めたこの映画の公開は遅れに遅れ、テレグラフの記事でも"long-delayed film"とあるが、一応、今年の10月に英国で上映予定となっている。
日本公開の報はいまのところないが、ぜひ観てみたい。

最後に、こちらも気になる映画。
ミッチ・カリンの小説A Slight Trick of the Mindを原作とした'Mr. Holmes'である。

隠居生活を送る93歳のシャーロック・ホームズを扱ったこの映画では、ホームズが終戦後の日本を訪れる場面も描かれているという。
昨今、「シャーロック・ブーム」の波が日本にも押し寄せていることと合わせて考えれば、'Mr. Holmes'が日本で公開される可能性は高いだろう。
