スティーブンソンの怪奇小説が読者の心のなかに植え付ける恐怖のひとつに、動物の人間化(humanization)ならぬ人間の動物化(animalization)の表現がある。

良くも悪くも典型的なヴィクトリア朝の紳士として描かれるジキル博士の表面的な「善良さ」もたしかに怖い。
しかしやはり、ハイド氏に顕著にみられる退行的な傾向には、より本能的な怖さがある。

ハイド氏の性向は、しばしば"atavism"あるいは"reversion"といった言葉で説明される。
言うまでもなく、スティーブンソンの念頭にあったのはダーウィンの進化論である。
ダーウィンの生物進化論が『ジキル博士とハイド氏』の執筆に与えた影響はたびたび指摘される。

『種の起源』が出版されたのは1859年。
『ジキル博士とハイド氏』が刊行されたのは1886年。

ダーウィンの革命的な著作から影響を受けたのは文学者だけではない。
印象派の画家ドガも、ダーウィンから影響を受けたひとりである。

画家がとくに影響を受けたのは、ダーウィンの『人及び動物の表情について』であった。
この著作を読んだドガは、人間と動物の表情には共通点がみられることに興味を覚えた。

そして、今回の一作《カフェ・コンセール　レ・ザンバサドゥールにて》。
中央やや右に描かれている赤い服を着た女性。

画家の関心は、通常のように上から光を当てて彼女の美しさを引き立てることではない。
むしろ、下からの光を当てることで、文字通り光の当たっていなかった部分、すなわち彼女の動物的な一面を浮かび上がらせようとしている。

各方面に影響を与えたダーウィンの著作。
ちなみに、ホームズもダーウィンを読んでいた。
