Captain Ces's Log #11 [Tanabata, QiXi, Chilseok]

 Ahoy Mateys!

Tanabata is right around the corner! Everyone knows the basic story of Tanabata, but do you know the actual history of Tanabata?

Tanabata is a Japanese star festival, which originated in China, where it is called the QiXi Festival.

In Japan, Tanabata originates from Kikkoden (乞巧奠), which means `The Festival to Plead for Skills,` which was the basis for the QiXi festival in China. It was celebrated in China, then adopted by the Kyoto Imperial Palace from the Heian period. The festival spread to the public during the Edo period, however it was mixed with Obon and other bon festivities, as Obon used to be held in July (July 15th), so Obon and Kikkoden were celebrated together. During this time, girls wished to get better at sewing, and boys wished to have better handwriting. They would write their wishes on strips of paper. Obon is now held on the 15th of August, or 8/15, and Tanabata is held on the 7th of July, or 7/7, making the two separate events.

The word Tanabata used to be read as Shichiseki (七夕). People believe that during that time, there used to be an ancient Shinto ceremony where a priestess would weave special cloth called `Tanabata,` near a river and offer it to the gods and pray for protection of the village`s harvest. Eventually Tanabata and Kikkoden merged into one and became the Tanabata that we know today!

In Korea, the festival is called the Chilseok festival. The stories are quite similar to the Japanese versions, however the Chinese variations of the stories of Tanabata are quite different from the Japanese and Korean versions.

In one particular Chinese version, the princess Zhinü, who weaved colorful clouds in the sky, fell in love with a human named NiuLang, got married, and had two children. Once the Goddess (Zhinü`s mother) found out, she was very angry because Zhinu, who was a celestial being, married a human. She forced Zhinu to return to heaven. NiuLang was very sad, but one day his ox began to talk and told him that if he killed him and wore his hide, he could travel to heaven to find Zhinu. He was very sad to kill his ox but he did so and wore the ox`s hide and took his two children along with him to find Zhinu. The Goddess was very angry, and used her hairpin to cut a river into the sky (the milky way). Zhinu and NiuLang were forever separated by the heavenly river, however, every year, the magpies (black birds) would take pity on the couple and form a bridge for them to meet once a year.

There are many different variations of the story. In another Chinese variation, Zhinu is the daughter of the Jade King.

Even Vietnam has their very own Tanabata Festival, however it is called Ngày mưa ngâu, which means `Continual Rain Day.` On the day of Ngày mưa ngâu, the two lovers meet and cry and cry, causing an endless rain through out the entire day.

 「この書類はどのインストラクターが書いたのかしら？」

 

そんなことがたまにあるのですが、

そういえば、男性インストラクターの文字か、女性インストラクターの文字かも判断がつかないッ

インストラクターNoraに聞いたところ、彼女にもわからないみたいです

 

日本人の文字なら、だいたい女性のものか男性のものか分かりますよね・・・

ここは慎重に言わなければなりませんが、

日本では、女性の方が 「傾向として」 丁寧または可愛い文字を書くので、パッと見て感覚的に判断が出来ます。

ところが、外国人の文字だとそうはいかないんですよ

 

Nora 「日本人は文字の綺麗さを気にするけど、アメリカではあまり興味をもたれていないわね」

僕 「まぁ、文字を見ればわかるよ」

Nora 「あ、でも特にお医者さんは文字が汚いわね」

僕 「それチョットわかる！アメリカでも日本でもそのイメージはあるんだね」

Nora 「見て、これ面白いよ～」

Noraはスマートフォンで検索して、医学部を風刺した海外の漫画を見つけ出しました・・・

　『う～む、文字が汚くてレポートが読めんよ。すばらしいッ！』

　『君は入学書類の文字が汚なかったな。だから合格できたんだ。』

など、鮮烈なユーモアで表現されています（英語だともっと面白いんですが、正確に思い出せません）

 

ただ単純に、患者さんの症状の見極めに集中するため、文字の丁寧さなど構っている場合ではないのでしょう

 

日本では、文字には特別な力があると捉えられていますね

「僕の名前は、画数占いで決まりました」 を英語で言うなら、

インストラクターRJ 「"My name comes from strokes fortune-telling." だな」

こんにちは

麦茶がチャットルームに登場ですッ（今週スタート）

 

僕 「今日は麦茶があるからねー」

インストラクターKevin 「あまり暑くないからね、今日は温かいコーヒーをいただくよ。」(扇風機に当たりながら)

僕 「本当に麦茶キライ？？」

Kevin 「好きさ 子供たちと一緒のとき、たーくさん飲むよ」

Kevinのその姿が目に浮かびます・・・

 

インストラクターSwaroop 「麦の香り、わかるかい？」

僕 「わかるよッ」

Swaroop 「まだ少し香りが足りないな。」

僕 「・・・確かにもう少し時間が必要だね」

Swaroopは、そんなクールなことを言いながら、お気に入りのキャラクターが描かれた可愛らしいCupで飲み物を飲んでいます。

このCupは譲れないみたいです

微笑んでしまいます

 

インストラクターFrancesca 「Tetsu、プレゼントよ」 (綿菓子を持って)

僕 「僕にッありがとぉぉぉ」

Francesca 「似合うと思って」 （綿菓子が）

Captain Ces's Log #10 [Summer Festivals]

 Ahoy Mateys!

Summer is here! Are you excited about the upcoming summer festivals? From traditional Japanese festivals, to major rock music festivals, the summer season is full of festivities in Japan!

If you`re up for some music, Fuji Rock Festival is just the place to be! Fuji Rock features tons of artists from all around the world! American artists, Japanese artists, English artists, etc.

July is right around the corner, so that means Tanabata is on it`s way! Sendai`s Tanabata festival is one of the most famous in Japan!

Kyoto is most famous for their Gion festival!

Making our way down south, Okinawa`s Eisa festival attracts visitors from all over the world!

Don`t forget to put on your Bingata if you`re planning on visiting Okinawa!

And we musn`t forget Obon! The first day of Obon is a very special day, as it happens to be my birthday! lol!

Back home in Virginia, I often attended the Watermelon Festival with my mother and sister. Many farmers and vendors offer free samples of watermelon throughout the streets of Carytown, Virginia. Did you know watermelon in Virginia costs about $4-$5? They are very delicious!

Emphatic Tense

こんにちは

ちょっと外国人としたケンカをしたり、自分の主張を伝えたい、なんて思ったりしませんか？

「ネイティブスピーカーとケンカできるようになれば、語学力も一人前」 って言われたりもしますし

 

今日は、インストラクターFrancescaが「大事だよ」と言っていた用法についてカジってみようかと

　"You didn't write the blog yesterday!" (昨日ブログ書かなかったでしょ！)

『僕は欠かさずブログを書いていますが、何かの手違いで昨日のブログが消えてしまったのでしょう。

こんなことを言われてしまいました。でも、確かに、僕は書いたはずなんです。』というシチュエーションです。

そういうときは・・・

　"I did write the blog." (書きましたよ!)

Francescaによると、

　"I'm absolutely sure that I wrote." に近いらしいです。

この用法の did は、現在形では三人称単数で does 、そのほかは do に変わります。

作り方は簡単ですね

 

さぁ、あとは主張するのみですッ

誰かが何か言ってこないかしら・・・ドキドキ

予報では、東京の最高気温は31度となっていましたが、絶対それ以上あるような

ビートンボックスではずっと室内にいられるので平気なのですが

 

最近インストラクターNoraがいい感じに日焼けしているのでうらやましいです・・・

僕 「僕も日焼けしたいんだよね～」

Nora 「いいじゃないそこのバルコニーに出れば日焼けできるわよ」

僕 「いまはダメだよ」

Francesca 「Tetsuは女の子みたいだから日焼けすべきね！」

僕 「あっ、こんな感じになりたいんだよねー」

力石徹 (Riki-ishi Toru)・・・彼こそハングリーだった日本男児の象徴ではないのかッかっこいいのにぃぃぃ

アメリカ人が知らなくても無理はありません

日焼けマシンのことは

アメリカ英語で "tannning bed" というらしく、

イギリス英語では "sun bed" というらしいです

 

電子辞書の中に、"tan" に関連する例文が数個あったので、

Noraにどれが Useful か聞いてみました

　△get a beautiful tan

　○get a suntan

　△the sun tanned his face

　×tan oneself

　○get tanned / become tanned

なるほどー、動詞としての "tan" はあまり使わないみたいですね

Noraは

　"I'm gonna go / I want to go tanning."

　"I need a tan."

　"I want to get more tan."

をよく使うそうです焼きたくない方は、

　"I don't like tanning." でいいみたいです

 

みなさんにとって、夏は Sun-tan の季節ですか？ Sun-blockの季節ですか？

こんにちは

スタッフルームでは、たまたま男三人が同じ座り方をしていたので思わず笑ってしまいました

 

僕 「この状態をなんていうの？」

インストラクターSwaroop 「 "sitting cross-legged" だよ」

インストラクターSon 「いや、これは "sitting cross-leged" じゃないぞ・・・」

Swaroop 「・・・あぁ、そうだ！これは "sitting with the legs crossed" だ」

　「あぐらを組む」 が "sitting cross-leged"

　「足を組む」 が "sitting with the legs crossed"

だそうです。アメリカ人でも意識しないと間違ってしまう表現なのですね

 

僕 「そうなんだぁ！じゃあ "sitting on a chair" と "sitting in a chair" は、どう違うの？」

Swaroop 「椅子の形によるなぁ。僕は "in a chair" で、、」 (座椅子にすわっています)

Son 「そして僕が "on a chiar" 」（普通の椅子にすわっています）

Swaroop 「でもあまり違いはないよ」

 

僕 「 『海外では、足を組むことは女性的な仕草だから、男性はあまり足を組まない』 って聞いたことがあるんだけど、そうなの？」

Swaroop 「ふッ！そうだな。男は足を組まない」

Son 「あはは、そうだよ」

僕 「本当なんだー、日本ではあまり気にしないな。・・・でも、なんで二人は足を組んでるの」

Swaroop ＆ Son 「あーッ」

Captain Ces's Log #9 [Facial Recognition]

 Ahoy Mateys!

Facial recognition systems are commonly used throughout the world.

Law enforcers often use facial recognition systems in surveillance equipment.

So what exactly is a facial recognition system?

A facial recognition system is a computer application that identifies and/or verifies a person`s face!

Recently, many countries have begun taking visitors` photos when they pass through immigration. The computer application scans your face, identifying where your eyes, nose, and mouth are, as well as determining the shape of your head. This is how the police often find criminals who are on the run.

The movie `Avatar` uses technology that is a step up from facial recognition systems. It`s called performance capturing, where a real actor`s actions and facial expressions are recorded and coverted into CG animation!

 

Facial recognition systems are also used for entertainment. iPhone offers a vast array of applications that use facial recognition sytems.

For example, FatBooth shows what you would look like if you gained a little weight. lol

AgingBooth shows you what you will look like in a few years!

And one of my favorite applications that I am currently hooked on is ZombieBooth!

 

Facial recognition is becoming more and more common in our everyday lives. Perhaps one day house keys will be replaced with facial recognition systems!

We`re becoming more and more high tech! lol.

French Chocolate!

こんにちは

今日は、生徒のYさんからフランスのお土産でチョコを頂きましたッ

色とりどりの紙に包まれ、まずカワイイッ

10枚のチョコなのですが、色ごとにカカオの産地が違い、食べくらべするのが楽しいです

フランソワ・プラリュというブランドみたいです

さっそくお出しして、皆さん紅茶やコーヒーを飲みながらチャットをエンジョイなさってましたね

 

今日食べ比べしたのは、"MADAGASCAR" "PAPOUASIE" "INDONESIE" の三種類

なんのこっちゃ分からないので調べてみると、マダガスカル、パプアニューギニア、インドネシアでした

　マダガスカル産はかなり酸味を強く感じましたインストラクターRJはこれが一番らしいです

　パプア産は焙煎香が引き立ってました僕はこれが一番好きです

　インドネシアは上の二つの中間くらいで、コクもありました

どれも個性があって、甘さ控えめで美味しかったです

他の味も楽しみですね

こんにちは

インストラクターNoraは役所から届いた書類を眺め、

何が書いてあるのか全く解らないようで、僕に手渡してきました

 

日本にいて日本語で挨拶ができないとかはマズいですが・・・

「郷に入っては郷に従え」とは言いますが・・・

さすがに、あ～んな難しい書類は読めなくていいよNora

役所で外国人を相手にする部署だったら、

せめて必須書類だけでも英語や中国語バージョンを作っておけば良いのに・・・と思ってしまいます。

外国人に対して甘いですかねー？

 

Nora 「この M T S H って何かしら？」

僕 「Meiji Taisho Showa Heisei だよ。自分の誕生日の Japanese Year は覚えておいた方が良いね」

ちなみにNoraは昭和生まれです仲間ッ！

 

ご機嫌の良いNoraは、お茶についてこう語りました。

 

　　　「アメリカ人は緑茶に対して健康神話みたいなものを抱いているの。

　　　　『緑茶を飲むとやせられる』ってね。

　　　　それにしても日本人は緑茶が好きね。

　　　　それぞれ好きなブランドがあるんでしょ？

　　　　私はこのお茶が好き。

　　　　この緑色が好き。

　　　　このパッケージが私を飲みたい気持ちにさせるの。」

こんにちは

 

以前、数学の教科書のイメージがあったインストラクターSwaroopも

最近は専ら日本語と格闘しているようで、

「あげる」 「くれる」 「もらう」 の違いや、「とめる」 「とまる」 「やめる」 「やむ」 の違いを分析していました

しかも彼らしく、その分析はかなり正確で日本人の僕もビックリしてしまいます

Swaroop 「これは "Transitive Verb" で、これは "Intransitive Verb" だな、ふむふむ。ということは、Tetsuya！これは "Passive Voice" で使うんだろ？」

普段無意識に使っている日本語を、英語で、しかも英語の文法用語で説明するとなると、

もう、かなり混乱してきますね

僕の説明で説得力あるかしら？

 

「この Chapter は、この順番で進めていった方が理解してもらえるな！」

「この Grammar は、○○を説明しておかないと混乱しそうね。」

僕は、インストラクターがレッスンの準備をしている姿がスゴク好きです

母国語の会話なのだから、準備なんかしなくても教えられるだろう・・・と思いきや、彼らは熱心にレッスンのテキストを読んでいます

「僕はこの仕事が好きなんだ。だからずっとこの仕事を続けたいんだ。」

そう楽しそうに語ってくれるインストラクターもいます。

彼らのモチベーションと経歴を見ると、ビートンボックスは層が厚いなぁなんて思ってしまいます。

これからも前進していってもらいたいですね

Captain Ces's Log #8 [Solar flares]

 Ahoy Mateys!

The sun is the brightest star in our solar system.  Without it, we cannot exist, but if the sun were to release it`s wrath upon us, we would cease to exist!

Aside from the recent climate changes all around the world, solar activity on the sun`s surface has been increasing as we approach the end of the sun`s solar cycle called the `solar maximum.`

As we reach the peak of the solar maximum, we can observe an eruption of solar flares. Sometimes these sun flares disrupt the Earth`s magnetic field, which could disturb our communication and energy sources.

In 2006, scientists at NASA believed that the next solar maximum would be the strongest since 1859. In 1859, there was a solar flare so strong that the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) could be seen from as far as Rome. Usually, the northern lights are only visible within the artic circle - Canada, Alaska, etc. The southern lights, or aurora australis, are visible within the Anartic circle - Anartica, South America, Australia.

So in 1859, Earth experienced a very, very strong solar flare. If another such solar flare erupted, it would definitely disrupt the Earth`s magnetic field, knocking out all communication and energy sources around the world! We would have to return to human life before the discovery of electricity. Can you imagine? No phones, no computers, no lights! Japan would return to the Yayoi era! lol

Recently, some scientists believe the solar maximum will be one of the weakest in history, so hopefully, those recent predictions are correct!

Scientists believe the solar maximum will reach it`s peak in 2012 or 2013. What do you think about the predictions about the end of the world in 2012?

Hopefully the sun will keep cool. lol

Cold Water

こんにちは

インストラクターMariaがレギュラーとして戻ってきたので、

あの優しい空気を感じられると思うだけで癒されます

Mariaは今日、頑張りたいときに僕はどうすれば良いのか、アドバイスをくれました

 

　「冷たい水をかぶりなさいッ」

 

Mariaによると、冷たい水をかぶると、身体を暖めようと内側からエナジー（Energy）が湧き出てくるらしいです

滝行荒行寒水行なんとも日本的な

お爺さまがドイツの方で、そちらの方面で言われているとか、いないとか・・・

なるほど日本とドイツは、なんとなく似ているところがあるような気がしてたんですよね、

真面目というか、ものづくりによく見られますが、職人気質なところがありますよね

気合いの入れ方も似ていますねッ

 

ビートンボックスのインストラクターは全員Native English Speaker ですが、

彼らのルーツをたどると世界中の文化を吸収していることがわかります

インストラクターRJは、自身の名前からドイツや聖書にルーツがあることを教えてくれました。

外国人は、自分の名前をミドルネームとして子供に授けるのが好きなのかと思いきや、

そんなこともないらしいです

 

英語が世界中に広がっているからこそ、違う文化をもつ人々が英語を使えるし、

英語で様々な文化に触れることもできるんですよね

さて、帰ったらドイツ風に水をかぶろうかしら、日本風に水をかぶろうかしら？

「Passive Voice」

こんにちは

英会話では、「楽しかった」 と言うだけでもチョットした注意が必要ですよね・・・そこが面白いところ

英語に触れていると、小さな気づきがあってウキウキします

例えば、「楽しくなかった」 を表現しようとするとき

"I wasn't fun." と言いたくなりますが、

インストラクターNora は "I didn't have fun." と言っていました

僕は無意識に前者を使っていそうです

 

"have fun" とは違いますが、

気をつけなければいけないのは受動態 （Passive Voice） の使い方ですね

日本語では 「驚く」 と表現しますが、英語では「驚かされた」 と表現するように、簡単なことを伝えるときにも、か～なり受動態が潜んでいます

 

・I am surprised at ～　「～に驚く」

・I am interested in ～　「～に興味がある」

・I am excited (about等) ～　「～にワクワクする」

　exciting game　「わくわくさせる試合」

　excited audience　「エキサイトした観客」

・I am disappointed at ～　「～にガッカリする」

・I am bored with ～　「～にうんざりする」

・I am amazed at ～　「～に驚く」

・I am always irritated by her selfishness.　「私は彼女の身勝手さにいつもイライラする」

・I am upset that/about ～　「～にムシャクシャする」

・・・などなど。

 

これらは、普段から使用頻度が高い簡単なものですが、

"I" が主語の場合、「過去分詞 (-ed 等) 」を使わずに「現在分詞 (-ing) 」を使ってしまうとチョット痛々しい人になってしまう語です・・・

例えば、

"I'm amazing!" と言ってしまうと 「僕は大したものです！」 になってしまいます

 

あと、面白いのは "Known ＋ to" と "known ＋ by" の違い

"The fact is known to everyone." 「その事実は皆が知っている」 ・・・皆から知られているのに "by" ではないんですね。

"She is known as an Indian by her dress." 「着ているものから彼女がインド人だとわかる」 ・・・これは理由をあらわす "by" ですね。

　 "A be known as B by C"　「AはCによりBと判断される」 という型です。

 

『ちょっと多いかな』と思いますが、

これくらいおさえておけば、普段の生活での 「注意すべき受動態」 の何割かはカバーできそうですよね
