サッカー・ワールドカップ南アフリカ大会、決勝トーナメント1回戦、日本はPK合戦で惜しくもパラグアイに敗れ、

ベスト８進出にはなりませんでした。



とっても残念でしたが、あまり明るいニュースがない昨今、間違いなくSamurai Blueの選手達は

私たちに夢や最高のチームワークを見せてくれたのではないでしょうか


今後に続く日本代表の更なる活躍を応援していきたいですね

Children`s National English Speech Contest

昨年から始まった「全国こども英語スピーチコンテスト」（後援：文部科学省　外務省　オーストラリア大使館　他）
今年　第2回目を迎えるわけですが、ビートンボックスからも2名の小学生が出場することになりました

「私の街」「私の夢」など　テーマに合わせて自分達で文章を作り５月半ばから練習してきました
そして今日、第一次審査にあたる電話によるスピーチ録音。
インストラクターMiekeに見守られながらの録音開始です
二人とも　緊張
でもでも、録音が始まると　度胸満点

さ～て　結果は8月です。
この第一次審査を通過したら　地区大会出場です。
それも通過したら　赤坂BLITZにおいて　いよいよ全国大会決勝です

二人共に第一次審査合格　そして　全国大会に出場できますように

I just wanted to send a quick message to say hello!
I hope everyone is doing well! 

I heard that the rainy season has begun in Tokyo. 
It must be so humid!
The weather here is great!  Sunny, blue skies, and zero humidity--it is very comfortable.
The average temperature has been around 20℃ lately. :)

Have you been watching the world cup?  I'm sure you have!
I watched Japan play... Congratulations!  How exciting!
Hopefully, they will continue to do well!  Of course, I also hope the US continues to do well, too!

I hope you all have a good Summer!!  Does anyone have any plans yet??

Changing adjectives to adverbs

Hello everyone!

Last week we learned about words which can be changed into different word classes. For example, words which can be changed from a noun to an adjective, verb, or adverb. Sometimes the word stays the same, but sometimes the word changes its spelling and pronunciation, particularly at the end of the word.

Today, I will talk about some of the general rules about exactly how to make that change. In particular, I will show some of the rules for changing adjectives into adverbs.

In most cases, the change is very simple. You just add '-ly' to the end of the word, and it becomes an adverb. Here are a few examples:

Bad (He is a bad singer) -> Badly (He sings badly)
Quiet (She is a quiet speaker) -> Quietly (She speaks quietly)

For certain kinds of word endings, the ending has to be different. There are five general rules for this change:

-le becomes -ly Gentle -> Gently
-ic becomes -ically Automatic -> Automatically
-y becomes -ily Easy -> Easily
-ll becomes -lly Full -> Fully
-ue becomes -uly True -> Truly

Be careful: Adjectives that ALREADY end in -ly usually can't be made into adverbs. For example, you can't take 'friendly' (a friendly person) and make an adverb 'friendlily'. There is no such word as friendlily, and there is no adverb form of the word friendly.

Remember: All rules about changing words and spellings have many exceptions. They are general guidelines that work about 90% of the time. Don't be surprised if you sometimes see a word that doesn't obey these rules. For example, the adjective 'public' as in 'a public building' ends in -ic, but the adverb form is usually 'publicly' instead of 'publically'. Follow the rules whenever you can, but be careful about tricky exceptions!

Pickled plums

鬱陶しい梅雨のシーズンですがこの季節でなければ味わえない楽しみはいくつかあります。

例えばカラフルな紫陽花をめでること

そして・・・梅干と梅酒をつけること。

今週末は梅干し・梅酒作りの予定。
埼玉県に越生という梅の有名な場所がありそこの梅を使います。

梅干は自分で作れば塩分も控えめに出来ますし、梅酒は焼酎ではなくウイスキーやブランデーを使ってオリジナル梅酒が作れます。


Timは梅干は苦手らしく”very sour～"と顔をしかめていました(苦笑）。
しかし昨年お母様が来日された時、梅酒がとっても美味しいと気に入って帰られたとか。

今年も楽しみです。

Hello everyone!

Today we will review word classes - something most learners of English already know a lot about. What is a 'word class'? It means a kind of word. The most well known word classes are Noun, Verb, Adjective, and Adverb.

In a previous lesson, I talked about how one word can often be both a verb and a noun, depending on how it is used. Today, I will give several examples of how one word can be changed into any of those four word classes. Sometimes the word changes slightly, for example by adding 'ly' to make it into an adverb, and sometimes the word stays the same, but is used differently. For example a word which is both a noun and a verb often does not need to change.

Lets look at the word 'anger'.

First of all, anger is one of those words which is both a noun and a verb without changing. So:

Anger (noun) : 'Anger is a powerful emotion.'
Anger (verb) : 'Try not to anger the dog.'

Going further, we can make an adjective with a small change. So we now have a word that can describe nouns:

Angry (adjective) : 'The dog is angry.', 'The angry dog barked at the mailman.'

And we can use 'ly' to make an adverb, which we can use to describe verbs:

Angrily (adverb) : 'The dog barked angrily.'

Another example:

Sad (adjective): 'The man is sad.'
Sadness (noun): 'There is too much sadness in the world.'
Sadden (verb): 'The tragedy saddens me.' (this has the same meaning as 'The tragedy makes me sad.')
Sadly (adverb): 'The man walked sadly away.'

Some words can't be made into all 4 forms. Think about the word 'happy':

'I am happy' (adjective)
'Happiness is the most important thing in the world.' (noun)
'He danced happily around the room.' (adverb)

But there is no verb form of 'happy'. Instead we need to say 'that makes me happy.'

One more example: The word 'fast' can be an adjective or an adverb, but not a noun or a verb:

'That is a fast car' (adjective)
'He can run fast' (adverb)

Remember: the same word can often be used in many different ways, and it is important to use the correct grammar depending on what class the word is. Try to think of more simple words that can be used in all 4 word classes!

A menu of the dinner

こんばんは

今日は　特に主婦の皆様の共感を得る(?)お話を・・・（笑）


夕飯のメニューって困りませんか？
私は、いつも頭を悩ませております
メインは　肉？魚？それとも？？？
そして、野菜は絶対に必要だから～
煮物？炒め物？サラダ？
冬には鍋料理は頻繁に登場するけど、この季節　ちょっとね・・・

今日、Timも考え込んでいました。
料理上手なTimですが、ここでは調理できません。
「何　食べようか～～～？野菜をいっぱい食べたいんだよ
　サラダ？野菜サンドイッチ？それとも野菜カレー？
　ん～～～～～～～～」
と考えながら出掛けていったTim。
さて、今夜のディナーは何かしら？
・・・

At / in a building.

Hello everyone!

Today we will learn about two prepositions - 'at and 'in'. Using these prepositions can be tricky, because they are often used with the same kinds of places, but the emphasis is slightly different.

When we are talking about places that are buildings, we use 'at' to emphasize a public place, and we use 'in' to emphasize the place as a building with people or things inside it.

Compare these examples:

'I had a busy day AT the office' - emphasizing the office as a public place.
'I left my bag IN the office' - emphasizing the office as a building with something inside it.

'There is a good film AT the cinema' - emphasizing the cinema as a public place.
'It was hot IN the cinema' - emphasizing how things were inside the building.

One important thing to pay attention to is, we always use 'at' before 'home' or 'work'. We never say 'I stayed in home' or 'It was very busy in work'. We always say 'I stayed at home' and 'It was busy at work'.

Just remember: when you want to choose between 'at' or 'in' for buildings, ask yourself how important it is to emphasize that things are INSIDE of the BUILDING. If it's not very important, use 'at'.

Next week we will think about using these prepositions for other kinds of places.

こんにちは
今日は　なんだか鬱陶しい空模様ですが、そろそろ梅雨に入るのでしょうか～

先日、Miekeと日本の夏の食べ物の話しをしていて、
「素麺って知ってる？」と聞いてみると、「食べたことない・・・」の答え。
「とっても簡単！約2分間茹でて　ネギやわさびなどを入れて素麺つゆで食べるのよ」
簡単だから作ってみよう～～～　てことになって　今日の休憩時間に作りました

今日のディナーはシンプル素麺

さて、Miekeの感想は？
「Today I tried somen for the first time - it was very tasty! It`s very refreshing and simple to make so I can see why this is a great summer food in Japan.
