Ryan Murdock という国籍不明の旅行家がTom Sheppard にインタビューした会話の記録がある。こういった会話を通じて Tom Sheppard という人物がより浮かびあがる。サハラ砂漠のエクスペディションに対する動機や継続性の理由が、全てではないが、理解出来る。なぜ？ Tom Sheppard は砂漠に惹かれサハラ砂漠でのエクスペディションを継続して来たのか、その動機は何か？ そして、そこから我々は何を学ぶ事が出来るのか？彼の動機を自身にも当てはめてみたいと思った。
Ryan: What were the turning points in your life? What was the tipping point that caused you to take up exploration so wholeheartedly? What is it about you/life experiences that made you so responsive to this kind of pursuit? Did someone help you or champion you along the way?
Tom Sheppard: The clincher, the moment from which I was permanently hooked on the desert, is touched on in Quiet for a Tuesday (QFAT) – seeing dawn break from an aircraft over Jebel Uweinat in south east Libya and the vastness of the desert emerge from the shadows beneath us. It brought tears to my eyes. Almost surreal, such a landscape gradually appearing out of the grey beneath. Predisposition to this response? I’ve never been a gregarious person (beware, more cliché-labels looming!) but landscapes like that have double the impact if you’re on your own without the distractions and pressures of other people. And no, there was no champion/coach in the background.
人生を変える結果となったターングポイントについて、つまり、砂漠の旅を継続してきた人生において、そのきっかけは何であったのか？ という問い対してシェパード氏はこう答えている。それは、ある朝にサハラ砂漠の上空から観たサハラの夜明けの光景であった。飛行機がリビアの南東にある Jebel Uweinat を越えた所で地平線から太陽が昇り砂漠の大地を闇からグレーに染めていったその光景に深く感動し涙を流し、人知を超えた偉大な存在を感じた事による。（その夜明け前の数分の出来事は後に Quiet for a Tuesday という彼の著書となり、一時の感動は一冊の本として実態となっている）。
遠廻しな表現を止めて理解すると、シェパード氏はその朝、神に出会ったのである。そして彼がサハラ砂漠へのエクスペデッションに惹かれ結果的に何度もサハラ砂漠を旅したのは神を求め、神に出会いに出かけたのである。これは僕の勝手な解釈に過ぎないが、なぜか確信を持っている。ならば、彼はエクスポローラーと名乗った修道者であり、彼の砂漠紀行は巡礼であったのだ。
我々がランドクルーザーを駆って都会を離れ自然を求め、時として一人で静寂な自然の中に身を置く時にシェパード氏の心情と重なる経験をするのではないだろうか、オーバーランダー、エクスペデッションの真の目的はここにあると思っている。
