The following is from a feature article in the November 26 issue of the monthly magazine WiLL titled "I Want to Curse and Kill Xi Jinping's Dictatorship! and featured a dialogue between four authors, including Tomoko Ako, a professor at the University of Tokyo, Tan Lomi, a writer, Yang Yizhi, and Liu Yanzi, a Chinese literature scholar.
As I have mentioned, WiLL and Handa are full of factual articles, yet they cost 980 yen! That's a bargain!
It is no exaggeration to say that they are the best monthly magazines in the world today.
It is a must-read not only for Japanese citizens but for people worldwide.
It is a must-read for men and women, young and old, and especially for all young people.
Some parts of the article already foreshadow the phenomenon that is now taking place in China.
(Emphasis in the text, except for the headline, is mine.
Confessions of Lu Xun, a Literary Scholar
Yang
I believe that the cause of the persistence of the Chinese Communist regime lies in each and every Chinese person.
The dystopian society ruled by totalitarianism that George Orwell described in "1984" has been realized in China. Still, the people living there have become accustomed to it and accept it as a matter of course. Furthermore, most Chinese abroad, unlike myself and Ms. Liu, are patriots who praise the Communist regime.
Ako
I think the Chinese people today are trapped in a surveillance system, and even if they wanted to resist, they would not be able to do so.
Yang
That is one aspect, but there are examples of people who have stood up to the same strong-arm government.
In 1979, Pope John Paul II visited Poland, which was still a satellite of the Soviet Union.
Despite the fact that the dictatorship of the time forbade the people from going out into the towns to welcome the Pope, he was greeted by the masses, who blocked the roads everywhere he went.
This religious activity eventually became a political movement, leading to the Polish democracy movement.
I believe that liberal democracy is not a "gift" from the developed world but something that is fought for and won by each and every one of the people.
Tan
The literary scholar Lu Xun made the following confession when he struggled with the significant policy of his writing.
"There are many Chinese people in this room right now. They are in great pain, but they are 'napping. So now I'm wondering if I should tell these people, 'The situation you are in is hopeless.' Even if I tell them, they can't get out of this room, which makes them even more unhappy. They can spend their time idly in a "nap" if they don't know anything. So it might be happier."
The "dozing" referred to by Lu Xun is precisely the Chinese living in today's surveillance society.
Chinese people do not say no to such a strange social system because Xi Jinping's patriotic education has penetrated the country to a great extent.
Yang.
I don't think so.
Each and every Chinese knows that the current social system is full of contradictions, and they are dissatisfied with the regime.
So why don't they rebel?
One of the reasons may be "education," primarily as today's Communist Party fully uses the Confucian value of obedience to brainwash the people, even more so than during the dynastic period.
And in recent years, Confucius Institutes have been established worldwide, and they are trying to impose it on foreigners as "Chinese culture."
Tan
An American video media outlet once covered the Chinese countryside and asked a woman passing by, "How is life in China?" and asked an elderly woman passing by, "How is life in China?
The lady replied, "I wish more great people would come out and improve the country.
The American newscaster was astonished and shouted at the TV screen, "Why are the Chinese so dependent on their rulers that they don't want to improve their country themselves? He shouted at the TV screen.
Americans cannot understand this kind of altruism.
But Chinese people from their 20s to 40s are not educated in Confucianism in their schooling, are they?
Yang.
Yes, they did. My generation did not receive Confucian education either.
However, Confucianism is taught at home, so it is ingrained in the body.
Education learned at an early age cannot be easily erased, and to bring down the Communist regime, the Chinese people must first break away from Confucianism.
This article continues.
