Keiji Nagai, a veteran of the Palau-Peleliu war, told me the following.
"It's to protect Japan. To protect the families, women, and children living on the main islands of Japan. We were going to be a bulwark in the Pacific. We were willing to give our lives for that. That is why we fought so hard."
Mr. Nagai passed away on November 4, 2019.
