Tanjong Puteri swim Camp

The Swimming camp essay

B

Hi coach,Firstly I would like to thank you and my parents for the chance to experience this training camp. This training camp allowed me to learn and understand many concepts and practice. New techniques for all 4 of my strokes. The videos of myself and on YouTube has opened my eyes to see what I have been doing wrongly in my stoke and also my dive. But mainly I took away 3 main things from this training camp. Firstly I learnt the importance of a positive mentality. This is one of the most important things in life and swimming. I learnt that we have to talk it into existence and not just talk but also train to back that talk. It forces me to become better. Secondly, I learnt the key of pushing through and persevering through and not succumbing to failure. This means that one must never compromise and set Low standards such as always demanding the best from yourself and not giving any leeway to slack or even to perform poorly. This can be seen from many examples. Such as during the swimming training and using 100 percent effort for every set and every lap even when my legs is sinking and heavy even when my lungs are exploding or crying for air. This can be applied to our race form, pushing through each turn with a strong push off and underwater even when we are out of breath. Or even studying, when we don’t know the answer, we cannot just give up but attack the question from different angles. The third thing that I will carry with me is the swim technique and the drills as well as each practice’s key ideas and importance of each set. Each set that we complete has its own meaning and none of it are supposed to be done with a slow speed or without a good technique. We have to complete each set with good technique and high intensity based of the Programme that is provided. Such as en2/en3 and still doing the whole set with high elbows And lowering my head, as well as a flat and high body position. This can not only help me with swimming it can carry into life where the key meaning is to prioritise quality of product ahead of quantity of product. But despite these 3 things there are still many important things such as fitness and health. I have to get good habits for both my sleep and my dieting. Such as avoiding juices, sugars, and white carbohydrates. as well as having a stable and good sleep schedule such as 7-9 hours of sleep. Now when I get back to Singapore I have to mentally prepare to make the correct choices for food and learn to not fail the marshmallow test I have to keep the diet everyday and persevere despite how good the food looks or how nice the drink smells. I will also learn to not procrastinate and do my work at the start of the night right after dinner or even to stretch before sleep. I have to and will carry all of my good habits such as sprinting for all of the set and not just the last back end speed.Swimming wise, I know that before practice I have to be early and not just on time or even late to stretch and set up the lane lines. I have to ask more questions challenge myself every training to perform better than the previous one. I know that I have to train more than just in the pool such as gym or even tabata. When we do tabata I have to put in the 100 percent of the exercise as it is extremely effective. The gym will also be able to help me improve my overall arm strength and also improve my overall core stability and even core strength to better my swim. I will practise the correct stroke technique. I learnt many stretches and areas of my muscle to stretch and gain strength such as my back and legs.

Overall, I think that this training camp is a great experience to learn from the older swimmers and also take knowledge and experience from you coach

Y

Firstly mobility is an important factor i have learnt from this camp to help improve in my swims. Mobility is the ability to move freely and efficiently through a full range of motion. In swimming, having good mobility is crucial for achieving proper body positioning and stroke mechanics. During the swim camp, i learned various mobility exercises and stretches to improve flexibility, joint mobility, and overall range of motion. These exercises can help me develop a greater range of motion in my shoulders, hips, and other key joints, allowing for smoother and more efficient swimming strokes. By focusing on mobility, i can enhance my swimming performance and reduce the risk of injuries.

Additionally, having the right swim technique is also a fundamental aspect of swimming. It involves proper body positioning, stroke mechanics, and breathing patterns. This swim camp have educated me on the swim technique of professional swimmers that helped them improve overall efficiency in the water. Coach provided me with detailed instructions on arm movement, leg kicks, body rotation, and breath control, ensuring that we understood and implement correct techniques for each stroke including underwater. By improving my technique, i can reduce drag in the water, increase propulsion, and conserve energy, ultimately improving my speed and endurance.

Lastly, swimming is a sport that requires a positive and focused mindset. The mental aspect of swimming plays a significant role in performance and overall enjoyment of the sport. In this swim camp, i learned about mental strategies, goal setting, and visualization techniques to enhance my mindset. These strategies help me build confidence, develop mental toughness, and overcome challenges in the pool. Additionally, this swim camp have provided me with opportunities to practice resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship, fostering a positive and supportive environment. Cultivating a strong and resilient mindset will not only benefit my performance in the pool but also transfer to other areas of my life.

hi coach! This camp was a very valuable experience that offered me opportunities to grow. I have significantly gained a lot from this camp. Frist and foremost, my swimming technique has changed from a normal freestyle to a galloping stroke and I have learned when to use which style at different parts of the race.  Although I was struggling with high elbow catch, I tried my best and have seen slight improvements in my strokes and times. My water feel was overall not that good and my times fairly satisfactory though I broke some training PBs, I felt I could've gone a little faster. I tried my very best even when I was sick and this camp also made me realise the importance of variable sprints. Moreover, this camp has improved my fitness and endurance. The gym and dryland sessions have me much stronger and powerful for my swims especially my dives. my core is still very weak as I still struggle with turns and push offs at max speed. Gym has also increased the strength and stamina in my legs as I always do a 2 beat kick but now I can swim with strong 6 beat kicks. Lastly, this camp has fostered teamwork and camaraderie. When I was sick, my friends regularly checked in on me and was there through my thick and thin. We supported and encouraged one another to achieve common goals and building relationships with like minded individuals can be precious not only during the camp but also in future swimming endeavours and beyond. I'm extremely grateful for these friends.

tanjung puteri training camp report

12 june 2023

During the course of this camp, I have experienced lot of ups and downs. I have learnt how to control myself in terms of what I could consume and do, like stretching, massaging and going to the sauna, to help me to improve in the water mentally and physically. The land trainings have helped me to activate all the muscles I had to use in the pool before the afternoon training so I could fast and efficiently using the right muscles. I think that the walking back and forth from the villa to the resort has helped me to strengthen my legs and improved my kicking. There were times where I felt like the pool was very long and I couldnt move, but my coach and my friends have helped me to maintain a positive mindset during the hard sets and do my best. Through coach’s pep talks, classroom sessions and corrective techniques, I was able to slowly change my technique over this camp to make myself propel forward with the right movements. During all the classroom sessions, we were able to watch all the videos to expand our knowledge on our nutrition to be aware of what types of foods we can or need to eat

M

i think the most important lessons i have learnt from this short training camp were these three things:

- the true struggle of taking control of your mentality. it was during this camp that i really struggled to overcome my fears and negative mindset for the first time, especially when fatigue set in and there were no excuses to skip or go slower than my peers. thinking positive and not compromising during training is one of the main problems i face, but this camp has given me a chance to start thinking differently.

- eating healthy !! i think the continuous salads really did have an effect on my performance these past few days. it has taught me to persevere and not give into my cravings before and during competition season, and the nutrition videos provided so much valuable information for me, especially because this is before SNSC

- getting along with my peers. i am now training with my real life competitors. yes, it is definitely more intimidating than training anywhere else, but it has pushed me to create an environment of friendly competition in both my mind and between my fellow swimmers, encouraging me to push harder, swim faster, and not give up halfway.

thank you coach for providing such an amazing opportunity for all of us to grow as both teens and swimmers !!

S

hi coach! I first want to say thank you so much for all the hard work you put into coaching us throughout this whole camp, i think all of us have really learnt a lot from your many sharings and classroom sessions!! For me, the three top things i learnt from this camp is the importance of being fit and healthy, persevering and pushing through my negative thoughts, and lastly i learnt many new techniques to help improve my strokes.

I learnt that being fit and healthy is one of the most important parts of being a good swimmer, as it’s not just about how fast we are in the pool but also about what we eat and do outside of the pool, that helps us become a better swimmer. Through this camp, you have always emphasised to us how crucial it is to eat healthy foods to help our bodies, and how it’s very bad to eat unhealthy foods like sugar and fried foods, because it will destroy our bodies, which eventually can stop us from swimming at our best!! Additionally, after all the gym sessions we have had in this camp, i’ve realised how important it is to not only do swim sessions, but also train outside of the pool in the gym, as it can train our muscles to further help us swim faster in the pool. I think working out in the gym can also help us lose fats and build more muscles, and after this camp, I want to work much harder not only in the pool but also out of the pool, by doing more land exercises, and also taking the tabata sessions at acsi seriously and doing them properly.

Secondly, i learnt how persevering and pushing through my negative thoughts can actually motivate me to make me swim faster. In this camp, there were many times in training that i felt like giving up and stopping at the wall to rest, and it was very common for me to have negative thoughts, like wanting to go home or wanting to fake a cramp and rest at the wall, but after seeing the rest of my teammates working hard, and also after listening to your talks about thinking positive, i learnt to push through and not give up in training. When i’m super tired, i try to remind myself that everyone else is dying in training as well, and we are all feeling the same pain, and this motivates me to work harder and not slack at training, so i’m thankful for my teammates for this! After this camp, i plan to listen to your advice and keep thinking positive, so that i will not give up and slack at training. I hope to put in more effort in training, regardless of how tired i am or how much pain i am in.

Lastly, i learnt many new techniques and tips during this camp to help improve all my strokes and make me swim faster. Every classroom session, you will show us many informative videos, and i feel that it has really helped me in training, as i’ve learnt a lot of new techniques through the videos. In training, i feel much better and faster after implementing the new techniques i have learnt in the classroom session. One thing I have always struggled with is my stroke tempo, and I know that my stroke tempo has always been very slow, which makes me swim even slower. But after watching all the videos in the classroom and practicing the new techniques at training, I feel like especially both my freestyle and fly stroke have been much faster, and I feel more smooth in the water. Most importantly, my training times have also improved a lot!! I hope to continue and maintain my timings as much as I can back at acsi, by putting in more effort in training and continue using the new techniques I have learnt in this camp. Thank you for sharing all the videos with us, I have learnt so much from this camp because of you coach
