無事到着

無事に到着しました。

昨夜、20:18に自宅を出発して、最寄りのICからすんなり関越道に乗り、何の問題もなく鶴ヶ島JCTで圏央道に乗って、八王子JCTで中央道へ。1時間程で大月JCTを通過しました。

それからは、雨との戦いでして、かなり強い雨の中、ひた走りました。途中、突然の霧に行く手を阻まれたりしましたが、出発してから2時間程で諏訪湖SAに到着。やはり雨でしたが、暫し休憩。眠気醒ましに珈琲を飲み、ガムを噛みつつ出発。恵那山トンネルを一気に駆け抜けて、多少速度を調整しながら見事に0時を数分過ぎたところでかみさん実家最寄りのICを出て、3割引ゲット！そのまま、かみさん実家に5分弱で到着しました。全行程、休憩コミで4時間程。雨の中央道はことの他疲れましたが、まぁ上出来じゃないでしょうか。

さぁ、今日から年末年始休暇の始まりです。どんなお休みになるんでしょうか？早速、今日にも、姪と初対面です。楽しみ楽しみ。

今夜帰省します

師走になってやたらめったら忙しかった2007年もあと数日で暮れようとしております。で、例年の如く、最終勤務日である本日夜、帰省いたします。

帰省のルートは、今夏と同じく、関越道～圏央道～中央道で、0時過ぎに目的ICを出るように移動します。渋滞の予想は全くありませんが、あいにく雨模様でして、あまりすっ飛ばすことは出来なさそうです。きちんとスタッドレスには履き替えてありますので、雪になっても大丈夫です。なんか、帰路に雪の影響を受けそうな予感がしないでもありませんが…。

ということで、年末年始は気になるニュースやScience Newsはお休みします…といっても、既にお休み状態に入っていたようなものですが。しばらくの間はモブログと化しますので、ご了承くださいませ。

では、皆様、本年もご覧頂きありがとうございました。来年もくだらんブログではありますが、お越し頂ければ幸いです。

    We microscopically demonstrate that the magnetic domain is controllably nucleated and erased in the uniformly magnetized wire using a current pulse in small magnetic fields. Lorentz microscopy is performed in Permalloy nanowires with in-plane anisotropy. The stochastic nature of the magnetization reversal due to spin wave and thermal excitations in the absence of magnetic field completely disappears and turns into deterministic in the presence of small magnetic field, which enables the magnetization reversal control. We interpret that the phenomena are associated with Zeeman energy stabilization.

    There is great interest in developing rechargeable lithium batteries with higher energy capacity and longer cycle life for applications in portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and implantable medical devices. Silicon is an attractive anode material for lithium batteries because it has a low discharge potential and the highest known theoretical charge capacity (4,200 mAh g-1). Although this is more than ten times higher than existing graphite anodes and much larger than various nitride and oxide materials, silicon anodes have limited applications because silicon's volume changes by 400% upon insertion and extraction of lithium which results in pulverization and capacity fading2. Here, we show that silicon nanowire battery electrodes circumvent these issues as they can accommodate large strain without pulverization, provide good electronic contact and conduction, and display short lithium insertion distances. We achieved the theoretical charge capacity for silicon anodes and maintained a discharge capacity close to 75% of this maximum, with little fading during cycling.

    Human menopause is remarkable in that reproductive senescence is markedly accelerated relative to somatic aging, leaving an extended postreproductive period for a large proportion of women [1] and [2]. Functional explanations for this are debated [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] and [11], in part because comparative data from closely related species are inadequate. Existing studies of chimpanzees are based on very small samples and have not provided clear conclusions about the reproductive function of aging females [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [18] and [19]. These studies have not examined whether reproductive senescence in chimpanzees exceeds the pace of general aging, as in humans, or occurs in parallel with declines in overall health, as in many other animals [20] and [21]. In order to remedy these problems, we examined fertility and mortality patterns in six free-living chimpanzee populations. Chimpanzee and human birth rates show similar patterns of decline beginning in the fourth decade, suggesting that the physiology of reproductive senescence was relatively conserved in human evolution. However, in contrast to humans, chimpanzee fertility declines are consistent with declines in survivorship, and healthy females maintain high birth rates late into life. Thus, in contrast to recent claims [16], we find no evidence that menopause is a typical characteristic of chimpanzee life histories.

Our analyses also demonstrate that the downstream kinase IKKβ contributes to facilitating formation of the complex CARMA1–Bcl10–MALT1 by mediating phosphorylation of CARMA1. Hence, our data suggest that PKCβ is crucial for initial activation of IKK. The activated IKKβ does not merely function as an effector enzyme but also modifies the upstream signaling complex through a feedback mechanism, thereby optimizing the strength and duration of the nuclear factor κB signal.

    We have investigated the Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator EtMe3P[Pd(dmit)2]2 with a spin-frustrated triangular-lattice in hydrostatic pressure and magnetic-field [Et and Me denote C2H5 and CH3, respectively, and Pd(dmit)2 (dmit=1,3-dithiole- 2-thione-4,5-dithiolate,dithiolate) is an electron-acceptor molecule]. In the pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram, a valence-bond solid phase is found to neighbor the superconductor and metal phases at low temperatures. The profile of the phase diagram is common to those of Mott insulators with antiferromagnetic order. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the resistivity in the metallic phase exhibits anomalous temperature dependence, ρ=ρ0+AT2.5.

    In a complex nervous system, neuronal functional diversity is reflected in the wide variety of dendritic arbor shapes. Different neuronal classes are defined by class-specific transcription factor combinatorial codes. We show that the combination of the transcription factors Knot and Cut is particular to Drosophila class IV dendritic arborization (da) neurons. Knot and Cut control different aspects of the dendrite cytoskeleton, promoting microtubule- and actin-based dendritic arbors, respectively. Knot delineates class IV arbor morphology by simultaneously synergizing with Cut to promote complexity and repressing Cut-mediated promotion of dendritic filopodia/spikes. Knot increases dendritic arbor outgrowth through promoting the expression of Spastin, a microtubule-severing protein disrupted in autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia (AD-HSP). Knot and Cut may modulate cellular mechanisms that are conserved between Drosophila and vertebrates. Hence, this study gives significant general insight into how multiple transcription factors combine to control class-specific dendritic arbor morphology through controlling different aspects of the cytoskeleton.

    Mate choice is an evolutionarily critical decision that requires the detection of multiple sex-specific signals followed by central integration of these signals to direct appropriate behavior. The mechanisms controlling mate choice remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the glial amino-acid transporter genderblind controls whether Drosophila melanogaster males will attempt to mate with other males. Genderblind (gb) mutant males showed no alteration in heterosexual courtship or copulation, but were attracted to normally unappealing male species-specific chemosensory cues. As a result, genderblind mutant males courted and attempted to copulate with other Drosophila males. This homosexual behavior could be induced within hours using inducible RNAi, suggesting that genderblind controls nervous system function rather than its development. Consistent with this, and indicating that glial genderblind regulates ambient extracellular glutamate to suppress glutamatergic synapse strength in vivo, homosexual behavior could be turned on and off by altering glutamatergic transmission pharmacologically and/or genetically.

    Certain classes of higher dimensional models suggest that the Casimir Effect is a candidate for the cosmological constant. In this paper we demonstrate that a sufficiently advanced civilization could, in principal, manipulate the radius of the extra dimension to locally adjust the value of the cosmological constant. This adjustment could be tuned to generate an expansion/contraction of spacetime around a spacecraft creating an exotic form of field-propulsion. Due to the fact that spacetime expansion itself is not restricted by relativity, a faster-than-light 'warp drive' could be created. Calculations of the energy requirements of such a drive are performed and an 'ultimate' speed limit, based on the Planckian limits on the size of the extra dimensions is found.

    Adult humans possess a sophisticated repertoire of mathematical faculties. Many of these capacities are rooted in symbolic language and are therefore unlikely to be shared with nonhuman animals. However, a subset of these skills is shared with other animals, and this set is considered a cognitive vestige of our common evolutionary history. Current evidence indicates that humans and nonhuman animals share a core set of abilities for representing and comparing approximate numerosities nonverbally; however, it remains unclear whether nonhuman animals can perform approximate mental arithmetic. Here we show that monkeys can mentally add the numerical values of two sets of objects and choose a visual array that roughly corresponds to the arithmetic sum of these two sets. Furthermore, monkeys' performance during these calculations adheres to the same pattern as humans tested on the same nonverbal addition task. Our data demonstrate that nonverbal arithmetic is not unique to humans but is instead part of an evolutionarily primitive system for mathematical thinking shared by monkeys.

    Pluripotency pertains to the cells of early embryos that can generate all of the tissues in the organism. Embryonic stem cells are embryo-derived cell lines that retain pluripotency and represent invaluable tools for research into the mechanisms of tissue formation. Recently, murine fibroblasts have been reprogrammed directly to pluripotency by ectopic expression of four transcription factors (Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and Myc) to yield induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Using these same factors, we have derived iPS cells from fetal, neonatal and adult human primary cells, including dermal fibroblasts isolated from a skin biopsy of a healthy research subject. Human iPS cells resemble embryonic stem cells in morphology and gene expression and in the capacity to form teratomas in immune-deficient mice. These data demonstrate that defined factors can reprogramme human cells to pluripotency, and establish a method whereby patient-specific cells might be established in culture.

    Cancers may arise from rare self-renewing tumor-initiating cells (T-IC). However, how T-IC self renewal, multipotent differentiation, and tumorigenicity are maintained remains obscure. Because miRNAs can regulate cell-fate decisions, we compared miRNA expression in self-renewing and differentiated cells from breast cancer lines and in breast T-IC (BT-IC) and non-BT-IC from 1° breast cancers. let-7 miRNAs were markedly reduced in BT-IC and increased with differentiation. Infecting BT-IC with let-7-lentivirus reduced proliferation, mammosphere formation, and the proportion of undifferentiated cells in vitro and tumor formation and metastasis in NOD/SCID mice, while antagonizing let-7 by antisense oligonucleotides enhanced in vitro self renewal of non-T-IC. Increased let-7 paralleled reduced H-RAS and HMGA2, known let-7 targets. Silencing H-RAS in a BT-IC-enriched cell line reduced self renewal but had no effect on differentiation, while silencing HMGA2 enhanced differentiation but did not affect self renewal. Therefore let-7 regulates multiple BT-IC stem cell-like properties by silencing more than one target.

    先日、年末の業界の連中の自己満足としか思えないつまらんスペシャル番組だらけのおかげで見る番組がどうやっても見当たらなかったので、録画しておいて見ていなかった「ガリレオ」の最終話前後編を一家で見ることに…。

    前後編ということで、いつもよりも長かったのですが、まぁそこそこ面白かったので、子供達も途中でだれることなく最後まで見ておりました。で、「おしまい」となってすぐに始まったエンディング。福山雅治演じる湯川が、いつもの如く到底意味があるとは思えないエア・数式をキャンパス内の屋外で始めた瞬間、次男K佑君が叫んだのです。
    「凄い！葉っぱ数えてる！」
    …たしかに、人差し指で数式を空中に書く様は、街路樹に映える緑を背景にして見てみると、どう見ても葉っぱを数えているようにしか見えません。しかも膨大な数の葉っぱを…。しばらく一家で大笑いしておりました。

    先日の私事で急遽帰省していたときのこと。

    ガソリンを入れるため、祖父ちゃんの車と別行動して、とあるドラッグ・ストアの駐車場で待ち合わせしておりました。先に到着してしばらく待っていると、隣にひどくうるさい車が停車…。明らかに改造してあり、「ドリフト命」みたいなくせに、異様なほど排気音がうるさくて、窓を閉じてあるにも関わらず、もの凄い五月蠅さ…。「とっとと車を降りて店内に入ってくれぃ」と眺めていると、イグニッション・キーを抜くのが見えたにも関わらず、エンジンはかけっぱなし…。今どき珍しいターボ車だった模様で、明らかにターボ・タイマー作動中でした。で、運転手が降りたにも関わらず、五月蠅いエンジンが切れないのを見た次男K佑君が「何でエンジン切れないの？」ときくので、「あれはターボっていうのが積んであってね、すぐにエンジンを切るとかぶっちゃって次にエンジンがかからなくなるから、ターボ・タイマーっていうのでしばらくエンジンが切れないようにしているんだよ」と教えてあげたのですが、納得がいきません。
    「地球温暖化、地球温暖化ぁ」
    と訴える次男K佑君でした。

    うん、君の言うとおり、環境にひどく優しくない車だよね。その上五月蠅いときたもんだ。けどね、お父さんとお母さんは、このとき、車の窓が開いてなくてよかったと、ちょっとホッとしていたのさ。だって、そんなに大きな声で叫んだら、店に向かって歩いていく兄ちゃんに聞こえちゃうからね。けど、君が「地球温暖化」を少しでも気にかけてくれて、お父さんは一人の大人として嬉しいよ。
