It ain't over until the fat lady sings.

先日の冬季オリンピック、フィギュアスケートでは日本は男女とも金メダルはとれませんでしたが、選手は皆がんぱったと思います。　スポーツも人生も一回だけの勝負ではないので、「まだ勝負はついていない」と次回に向かってまた努力をして欲しいと思います。英語で、「まだ勝負はついていない」を "It ain't over until the fat lady sings." とも言うそうですが、オンライン辞書のUrban Dictionaryにこの表現の由来があったので、ここに紹介します。
Taken from the saying "It ain't over until the fat lady sings," commonly attributed to ex-Yankee ballplayer Yogi Berra.
Presumably, the "fat lady" in question is a stereotyped opera singer, replete in Wagnerian Rhinemaden garb. Ironically enough, the "fat lady" was usually singing the United States National Anthem, the traditional way to START a baseball game.
Sure, we're behind by 300 points. But it ain't over until the fat lady sings.
先日の試合では私も決勝で負けましたが、今年から試合は毎月の様にあるので、 "It ain't over until the fat lady sings." でまた頑張りましょう。

bolt

The Japan Times Online, March 2 の記事です。
Masuzoe issues reform ultimatum to ailing LDP Veteran lawmaker Yoichi Masuzoe issues what could be taken as an ultimatum to his ailing Liberal Democratic Party, saying a failure to restructure will not only push the public to abandon it but may force its ranks to bolt as well.
この "bolt" ですが、 "nut and bolt" とか　"bolt from the blue" しか思い浮かばないので意味が分かりませんが、新聞記事なので先を読みます。 　
The trend could spark some members to force Tanigaki out of his seat, he warned, while also touching on the possibility of creating a new party himself.
"its ranks" はLDP Memberを指しているので "bolt" はここでは余り良くない意味になることが想像できます。　ここで辞書を引きます。

・Dictionary.com: 1.(used with object) to discontinue support of or participation in; break with: to bolt a political party. 2. (used without object) to break away, as from one's political party.
なるほど "bolt" が出てくる訳が分かりました。

serve me right

リーダーズダイジェストにNury Vittachiという方が毎月書いているUnbelievableと言うコラムがあり、話しぶりがいつも大げさで冗談と本当の区別が付きにくい（恐らく大半が冗談）内容です。その１月の記事はスピーカーを紹介するThe Art of Introductionについてで、その中に次ぎの文がありました。
This time, I asked to read the moderator's introduction before I got up on stage. My ego, which is so big I often have to enter rooms on my knees, snapped into action. I told her: "Your introduction says 'He has sold more than 90,000 books.' That's grossly out of date. It would be more accurate to say several hundred thousand books." 60 seconds later, she was up on stage. "I am delighted to introduce our speaker to you," she said. "This man has sold several hundred books." Serves me right.
最後の表現 "Serves me right." は前置きにエゴ云々があるので売れた本の数が減ってしまったのは当然の報い、と言う事だと思いますが、この様な慣用句的な表現は教科書では余り習わないので急に言われても直ぐには分かりません。　辞書にこの表現があるか確認します。

・UltraLingua English Dictionary: To treat, or cause to befall one, according to his deserts: “it serves the scoundrel right.”
この "deserts" は: 1.Often, deserts. reward or punishment that is deserved: to get one's just deserts. 2.the state or fact of deserving reward or punishment. の意味だと言う事も分かりました。　先日激痛があった事を書きましたが、その後マンションで漏水事故があったり（プライベートの事なので余り書きたくなかったのですが）良くない事が続いています。　何か私の日頃の行いが悪く、その報い、"Serve me right." でしょうか？

junket

毎週日曜日The Japan Timesに掲載されるRoger Pulvers氏のコラム、COUNTERPOINT、２月２８日のタイトルは： Feeling revulsion may signal you're finally home away from home
と逆説的な表現でした。　その中の一文に、以前も何度か見たことのある単語（"junket"）が出てきましたが直ぐには思い出せなかったので今度は確実に覚えたいと思いました。
What then made me any different from them? I, too, was wearing the latest Japanese designer clothing. I, too, had been sent as a VIP on this publicity junket.
"junket" を辞書で見ます。

次ぎの説明文は最近見つけたThe Word Detectiveというサイトからの抜粋です。

A "press junket" is a sponsored trip offered to journalists, either to accompany a gallivanting politician or to visit a corporate facility or the like. どこかの首長もオリンピック誘致を理由に豪華な "junket" をしたと聞いた事がありますね。

bake-off

昨日一日中卓球をしていたせいか腹の痛みは消えてしまいました。溜めていた腎臓結石の一つが身体の外に出たのだといいのですが、１週間位は様子を見ないと結論を出すにはまだ早いのでしばらく鎮痛剤を会社にも持って行けば何とかなりそうです。昨日の卓球の試合は残念ながら優勝を逃しましたけれど決勝まで残り準優勝だったのでまあまあです。
さて、英語の話題に移ります。リーダーズダイジェスト1月号のAsk Aunty記事からです。
ダウン症の子供を持っている女性が、姉が自分の子供の自慢ばかりするので悩んでいるとの相談に対してAuntyの答えに次ぎの文言があります。
If she must compete with you, tell her you'll meet her on the tennis court or at a bake-off.
"bake-off" も何か競争できるものの様ですが辞書を見ます。
・American Heritage Dictionary: A service mark used for a contest in which cooks prepare their own recipes, usually of baked goods, and prizes are awarded for originality and taste. This service mark sometimes occurs in lowercase with the meaning "any contest among cooks."
・Dictionary.com: Trademark.; a baking contest in which competitors gather to prepare their specialties for judging.
大文字で始めると登録商標の言葉なのですね。　同様な意味で cookoff/cook-off: a cooking contest in which competitors gather to prepare their specialties. もあり、こちらは登録商標ではないようです。 なるほど、この接尾語の "-off" は "play-off" の"-off" と同じですね。

guns

昨夜から色々大変なことがありました。会社から帰宅途中の息子から、腰が急に痛くなり歩けないとの電話があり、迎えに行って病院につれて行きましたが夜間なので結局痛み止めの薬と湿布の応急処置だけしてもらいました。　そんな事があった後、ベッドにつく頃から今度は自分の腹がほんの少しシクシクと痛み、大した事はないだろうと思い寝ましたが、真夜中にずきずきと我慢出来ないほど痛くなり顔からは汗がびっしょり、まぎれもなく３０年以上も付き合っている持病の腎臓結石が尿路に降りてきた尿路結石の痛みに違いありません。
この激痛はこれまで３～４年間隔で経験してきたのですが、最近５年程はまったく音沙汰なく、忘れかかっていたのですが、毎年の定期検査で、腎臓に石が３つできたいるのは３年前から判っていました。普通の痛み止めでは効き目がなく座薬の痛み止めで痛みを緩和するしかないのですが、幸い薬がとってあり何とかしのげました。今日は朝早くから卓球の試合があったので、明日も別の試合があるのですが、医者へは月曜に行くことにしました。卓球から帰ってきたら息子の痛みの原因は何と腰椎分離症だそうで完治するには時間がかかりそうです。
そんな訳で明日もバタバタしているので、毎週日曜日に投稿しているジョークを今日掲載しておきます。

かなり厳しいユーモアですね。しかしこれは米国だけに言える事ではないのが恐ろしい実態です。

deindividuation

Psychology Made SimpleのSocial Psychologyの章にDEINDIVIDUATIONと題された項目がありました。以下がそのDEINDIVIDUATIONの説明です。
When caught in the throes of some group behavior, people may lose their individual identities and behave in ways that are uncharacteristic of their typical selves. This may be exciting and fun, as in the case of the lacrosse team members who rush the field in victory and carry their coach around the stadium on their shoulders. It may also be disturbing and undesirable in the case of mob behavior and groupthink.
"DEINDIVIDUATION" は一見難しそうな単語ですが、説明文に "lose their individual" とあるので個性を失うこと、没個性の意味だと分かり、覚えるのも難しくは無いようです。　テキストには心理学に関係する言葉のGLOSSARYもあり、"DEINDIVIDUATION" は次のように説明してありました。
Phenomenon that when in a group, people may lose their individual identities and behave in ways that are uncharacteristic of their usual behavior.
Psychology Made Simpleのテキストはこれでやっと全部読み終わりましたが、２２ページあるGLOSSARYも読んで見ようと思います。

heady

今日もリーダーズダイジェスト1月号の記事からです。
A week later, my husband stood beaming at me, holding a cardboard box. When I cautiously looked in, a pair of brown eyes belonging to a terrier puppy met mine. It reached out towards me unsteadily. I carried its quivering body and held it close to my chest. I smelled of milk and it made me heady. It was instant parenthood.
この "heady" はどんな意味でしょうか？　辞書を見ます。

bogey

The Japan Times Online, Feb.27にあったキャプションです。
Pilot who dismissed Pearl Harbor radar bogeys dies at 96
"bogeys" は知らない単語なので、記事を読んでみます。
An American pilot who dismissed initial reports of what turned out to be the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died at age 96.
Kermit Tyler was an Army Air Force first lieutenant on temporary duty at Ft. Shafter's radar information center in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, when two privates reported seeing an unusually large blip on their radar screen, indicating a large number of aircraft about 210 km away and fast approaching.
"Don't worry about it," Tyler famously replied, thinking it was a flight of U.S. B-17 bombers that was due in from the mainland.
どうも "bogey" と "blip" は同じ物を指している様なので、ここではレーダーに映っている影（日本の戦闘機の影）を指しているのでしょう。　まず辞書で "bogey" を見ます。

"blip" も確認します。

"bogey" はゴルフの "bogey" （one stroke over par on a hole in golf）と同じなのも面白いですね。

"rile" and "rowdy"

The Japan Times Online, March 6 のキャプションに覚えたい単語がありました。
Aiko skips school after boys rile her
"rile" はこれまでに何度か見ている単語で、確かO. Henryの短編にも出てきたと思いますが、意味がしっかりと頭に入っていません。とりあえず記事を読んでみます。
Princess Aiko has been reluctant to attend school this week after being "treated harshly" by boys in her grade, an official of the Imperial Household Agency says.
"treated harshly" とあるので、"rile" が "bully" まではいかないはずと見当がつきます。　記事の先を読みます。
The school has found that a group of boys had dealt rowdily with several of school mates, including Princess Aiko, Nomura said, noting the palace has asked the school to address the matter.
(中略)
The princess "got scared Tuesday when a boy dashed out of a classroom past her," Higashisono said. "It must have reminded her of the rowdy behavior of several boys in the past . . . and made her uneasy."
なるほど、"rile her" は "made her uneasy" 程度の様です。　辞書で確認します。

"rowdy" の意味もだいたい見当が付きますが辞書で見ます。

辞書の例を見ても今回の記事にぴったりと合う言葉なのですね。
皇族は気楽な生活が出来るようにも思えますが、中々 "life of Riley" （blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2009/08/3）とはいかないようです。
