foundling

一年ほど前に「赤ちゃんポスト」Foundling Wheelを話題に取り上げましたが "DADDY-LONG-LEGS" の主人公 Judy は孤児院育ちなので "foundling" が頻繁に出てきます。確か最初に出てきたのは次ぎの文です。 "I suppose the registrar didn't think it would be right to ask a properly brought up girl to room with a foundling.
"foundling" はもちろん "a child who has been abandoned and whose parents are unknown" (OneLook Quick Definitions) の事です。ブログに書くと単語を憶えるのに少しは役に立つようです。

throaty

次ぎの文も "DADDY-LONG-LEGS" からです。
I was feeling terribly lonely and miserable and sore-throaty the night I wrote.
"throat" はもちろん知っていますが、 "sore-throaty" 単に喉が痛いと言っている訳ではなさそうです。
そこで "throaty" を辞書で引きます。
Dictionary.com: produced or modified in the throat, as certain sounds; guttural, husky, or hoarse.
"guttural" は分かりませんが、"husky" と "hoarse" は分かりますので "throaty" がしゃがれ声やかすれた声であることが分かります。
Cambridge Dictionary of American Englishによると "having a low sound" の意味もあるようです。
ついでの "guttural" の意味も調べますと(OneLook Quick Definition):
noun: a consonant articulated in the back of the mouth or throat
adjective: relating to or articulated in the throat ("The glottal stop and uvular `r' and `ch' in German `Bach' are guttural sounds")
adjective: like the sounds of frogs and crows ("A guttural voice")
これはどうも喉の奥を使う声のようですね。

beetling

"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" に初めて見る言葉ですが、元首相の村山さんを思い起こさる単語がありました。
They're gray, and your eyebrows stick out like a porch roof (beetling, they're called in novels), and your mouth is a straight line with a tendency to turn down at the corners.
この "beetling" の意味は文中に説明があるので辞書を引かなくても分かりますが一応辞書を見ます。
Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Jutting; being prominent; standing out from the main body.
Dictionary.com: jutting or overhanging; "beetle brows" （beetlingの説明なのに何故か"beetle brows" で例がでている。
WordNet 3.0: overhang, beetle -- (be suspended over or hang over; ``This huge rock beetles over the edge of the town'' )
Googleで "beetle eyebrows", "beetling eyebrows", "beetle brows", "beetling brows" の検索結果数を見てみると：

でした。この結果から見ると、"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" は約百年前に書かれた小説なので "beetling eyebrows" などと言う表現も今では余り聞かない表現なのでしょう。　従って "beetling eyebrows" などと言う言葉は憶える必要もないのでしょうが、たまたま今毎朝出勤前に見ているＮＨＫの朝の連続ドラマで「眉毛猫」と題したダンスが頻繁に出てくるのでそれを見ると "beetling eyebrows" が頭の中に出てくるのでどうも憶えてしまったようです。

Nee Jerusha

一年ちょっと前に "nee Yamamoto" の "nee"（真ん中のeにはアクセントマークあり）は "maiden name" を意味すると書きましたが、"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" の主人公である Jerusa Abott は "DADDY-LONG-LEGS" への５回目の手紙の最後を
Yours ever,
Judy Abott
(Nee Jerusha)
としました。理由は結婚して名前が変わったのではなく、単にファーストネームを "Judy" に変えたからです。
American Heritage Dictionaryを見ると
1. Born. Used to indicate the maiden name of a married woman.
2. Formerly known as.
とあり、"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" の主人公はこの "Formerly known as" の意味で "nee" を使った事が確認できました。

peroration

またジュニア小説を読み始めました。今度は古典の "DADDY-LONG-LEGS" by Jean Wedbster です。ジュニアと言っても主人公は大学生になるので十代後半用の小説かな？　まだ１０数ページしか読んでいませんが知らない、もしくは見たことはあるが忘れた単語が１ページに一つ位の割合で出てきます。ブロッグに書くのはその内で特に憶えたい単語や知っている単語なので知らない意味で使われているケースを主に取り上げていますが、今回はジュニア小説にしてはやけに硬い感じのする単語が９ページ目にあったのでそれを取り上げます。

"peroration" はいかにも硬い感じがしませんか？　早速OneLook Quick Definitionsを見ます。
1.(retoric) the concluding section of an oration ("He summarized his main points in his peroration")
2.a flowery and highly rhetorical oration
なるほど語尾の "oration" で "speach" に関係があるのは分かりますね。語源辞書のONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARYを引いて見ます。
c.1440, from L. perorationem (nom. peroratio) "the ending of a speech or argument of a case," from peroratus, pp. of perorare "argue a case to the end, bring a speech to a close," from per- "to the end" + orare "to speak, plead" (see orator).
そうですか、"per" に "to the end" の意味があるのですね。　

dovetail

"Changing America" by Bruce Stronach にあった単語でもう一つブログに書いておきたい、つまり憶えたい単語は次ぎの文にありました。
These beliefs dovetail very nicely with the American values of individualism and freedom that were discussed in Chapter I.
この "dovetail" の意味は "to join or fit together compactly or harmoniously" (Dictionary.com) であることは分かりますが、「鳩の尾」が何故このような意味になるのかが気になります。"dovetail" の名詞の意味に "a joint formed of one or more such tenons fitting tightly within corresponding mortises" とありますが、こういう場合は言葉より図や写真で "dovetail" を見れば一目瞭然なはず。"dovetail" は簡単に見つかりました。この "dovetail" をクリックすると "dovetail" の写真が見れます。インターネットは便利ですね。

mores

ジュニア小説 "A Wind in the Door" を読み終わりましたがリーダーズダイジェストも予約待ちなので子供が高校に行っている時に使っていた副読本 "Changing America" by Bruce Stronach が目に付いたので読みました。 ジュニア小説では平均して１から２ページに必ず辞書を引く単語が一つはありましたが、この８４ページの副読本の場合は辞書を引いた単語は８つでその中から二つを紹介します。まず次ぎの文を読んで下さい。
During this period the greatest excesses occurred in society - finding alternative lifestyles, the use of drugs, the liberalization of sexual mores, the rejection of religion and the breakdown of the traditional family.
"mores" の意味も読み方も分かりませんので辞書を引きます。
American Heritage Dictionaryの説明です。
1.The accepted traditional customs and usages of a particular social group.
2.Moral attitudes.
3.Manners; ways.
なるほど、そうすると "sexual mores" で性に関する道徳観、性に対する考えのような事を意味しているようだ。発音はここをクリックするとMerriam-Websterの"mores" の発音のページに行くので確認ができますが、モアではなくモレイズに近く、モにアクセントがあります。

watery smile

ジュニア小説 "A Wind in the Door" をやっと読み終わりました。"A Wind in the Door" からの最後の引用文です。
As he had intended her to, she gave a watery smile.
"watery smile" が分かりません。辞書を引くとなーんだとなりました。
OneLook Quick Definitions: filled or brimming with tears ("Watery eyes")
Vocabularyが足りないだけでは無く、想像力がいかに欠如しているか思い知らされた感じです。
大人の小説が読めるようになるにはまだまだ時間がかかりそうだ。

tingling

ジュニア小説 "A Wind in the Door" にこんな表現がありました。
Her body felt cold, and tingled with electricity.
感電でピリピリする感じなのでしょうか？　"tingle" の単語を知らないので辞書を見ます。
Dictionary.com: to have a sensation of slight prickles, stings, or tremors, as from cold, a sharp blow, excitement, etc.: I tingle all over.
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary: to have a feeling as if a lot of sharp points are being put quickly and lightly into your body:
My toes and fingers are tingling with the cold.
There's a line in that poem that makes my spine tingle every time I read it.
Googleで "tingle electricity" を検索するとコンピュータの漏電で感電した話が一杯でてきます。次ぎの文は私の使用しているＰＣと同じメーカーのユーザーの投書です。
If you touch them, you may get an electric shock. This discharge can vary in strength from a gentle tingle to a sudden jolt.
sudden joltとなると怖いですね。今のところ私のＰＣは問題ありません。

Comprise v. Compose

昨日の続きです。メルマガのArcaMax Vocabularyに "Comprise" と "Compose" 意味の違いについて解説がありましたので紹介します。
The facts: Strictly, "comprise" means "to include or be made up of," e.g. "New York City comprises five boroughs, while "compose" means "to constitute, make up," e.g. "Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island" compose New York City." Put simply, the whole comprises the parts, and the parts compose the whole.
更に解説は続きます。
However, an increasing number of speakers and writers now use "comprise" to mean "constitute, make up," e.g. "Five lakes comprise The Great Lakes." And "comprised of" is now often used instead of "comprise," e.g. "The index is comprised of 30 stocks" instead of "The index comprises 30 stocks."
The decision: The aforementioned uses of "comprise" and "comprised of" are now so widespread that it's pedantic to insist on the traditional use of these terms. The court rules that that it's acceptable to use "comprise" to mean "constitute" and to use "comprised of" to mean "comprise."
言葉の乱れ、意味、用法の変化はどこの言葉にもあるのですね。
