oil-concession

昨日久しぶりに葛西臨海公園に行きました。観覧車（Ferris wheel）がある広場で水仙祭りが開かれていたので寒いのに結構賑わっていました。水仙のある広場ではありませんが、公園の別の場所で紅梅が見事に咲いていました。もちろん白梅も咲いていましたが紅梅の方が見ごたえがありますね。
ところで、今年から日本英語交流連盟(ESUJ)のEnglish Clubは丸の内の日経オアゾで開かれることになりましたがその第１回の月例会で"The Nikkei Weekly" Special Magazine Issue, December 2007を頂きました。その小冊子 はEco-Japan 2007の特集で興味のある記事が満載でした。まだ全部は読み終えていませんが、次ぎの文はその中の記事からのものです。

concessionと言うと「譲歩」しか知らないので早速辞書を引きました。手元の電子辞書、ロングマンの説明の中に
・the right to have a business in a particular places, especially in a place owned by someone else
・a special right given to someone by the government, an employer etc., or the act of giving someone this right
とあります。 なるほどoil-concessionsは石油採掘権の意味だと分かりました。

prime

私の知っているprimeは、最も重要、主要な、極上の、最初の、などですが、どうもそれらの意味では通じない使われ方をした文がありました。残念ながら例文をメモをするのを忘れたのですが、調べるとprimeにはprepareの意味もある事が分かりました。
Compact Oxford English Dictionaryのverbとしてのprimeの説明です。
1 make (something, especially a firearm or bomb) ready for use or action.
2 introduce liquid into (a pump) to facilitate its working.
3 prepare (someone) for a situation by giving them relevant information.
4 cover (a surface) with primer.
「銃に弾を込める」、「呼び水を入れる」、「下塗りをする」はいずれも準備をすると言う意味で同じですね。

debunk

何度(umpteenth)辞書を引いても覚えられない単語が幾つもあります。 その様な単語を週に一度は取り上げようと思います。取り上げた単語はもしかすると覚えられるかもと期待していますが、甘いかな？　早速ですが、debunk 「（正体・真相を）暴く、暴露する」も何故か覚えられない単語です。　例文を挙げます。
The physicist debunked the psychic's claims.
The study debunks the myth that men are better at math than women.
Debunkはdebunk a/the mythで使用される事が多いいようです。 debunk a hero legendの例も辞書にありました。

aka or a.k.a.

James Brown, aka the 'Godfather of Soul'. この文中にあるaka が also known asの略語である事を知った時にちょっとまずいなと思いました。何故かと言うと、このブログで使っている私のニックネーム、バネはローマ字で bane と書きますが、英語の "bane" には「毒」、「破滅のもと」、「悩みの種」などの意味があり、"Foxbane" となると「トリカブト」の事です。そして、私の本名はこの bane の前に aka が付くのです。つまり、私のファーストネーム、XXX + aka + bane で「破滅のもと/悩みの種としても知られているXXX」となってしまいます。もっとも幸いな事にakaはアカとは発音されずエーケイエーと読むようです。英語で自分の名前を紹介する時に今まではRed Featherの意味がありますと言ってきましたが "XXX + a.k.a. + bane" とする手もできましたね。

wedgie man

以前ＲＤで見たcartoonに “I hate wedgie man most.” のせりふがあり、この"wedgie man" の意味が分かりませんでしたが、やっと "wedgie" がいたずら（prank）の一種であることが分かりました。

A wedgie is any one of a variety of pranks involving pulling the victim's underwear up so that it wedges between the buttocks. This is to cause the victim pain and humiliation in front of others. A variation, known as an "atomic wedgie" involves stretching their underwear from their butt over their head.

Wikipedia には何十ものSchool Pranksの解説があり、驚くほどです。　Pranksの名称だけを見ても中々面白いものがあります。　その内３つを以下に紹介します。

Hertz donut
Asking a person if he wants a "Hertz donut". An unsuspecting person will believe he has been offered some kind of doughnut of the Hertz variety. When the victim admits to wanting one, the prankster hits or punches the victim and then says, "Hurts, don'it?"

Goosing
The prankster jabs at the anus of genitalia of the victim, usually with his/her thumb. This was a fairly common practice during the 1930s and was not considered to be any more serious than hurling a spitball of putting gum on someone's chair. A variant is known in Japan as "kancho".

Capital of Thailand
This is generally done with the pranks asking their unsuspecting victim, "What is the capital of Thailand?" More than often the prankster calls "Bangkok" and punches the victim in the balls. This was popularized in the American Pie movies.

Bullyの手法は多彩ですね。

willies

１月２２日にThe Japan Times, ONLINEに掲載された作家・劇作家であるROGER PULVERS氏の
"Corny corkers add life to lingo, you elephant!"と題した記事は日本語のしゃれについて興味のある内容でした。例によって私の知らない単語が一つありました。
And if that won't give you the willies, then contemplate the Japanese comedians who have offered homage, if not plumage, to illustrious predecessors by imitating their names: Tani Kei (Danny Kay), Masuda Kiiton (Buster Keaton), and, perhaps the cleverest punned name of all, Sato B-saku. Sato B-saku took his name, however, from a man who was hardly a comedian, at least not by design, namely Prime Minister Sato Eisaku.
williesがその単語で英英辞典を引くと：
the willies: a nervous of frightened feeling
例文： All this talk about dead people is giving me the willies.
とありました。
それにしてもROGER PULVERS氏は日本語の造詣が並みの日本人以上に深いですね。

titular

昨晩は新しい職場で歓迎会をしてもらい帰りが遅くなりました。前任者は既に退職したのですが、新しい仕事は知らなければならない事が一杯あり、まだまだ当分大変です。
英語の勉強を（と言っても私の場合は単に英文を読み分からない表現、単語を調べるだけですが）する時間が極端に減りブログを更新するネタができません。そこで今日は古いメモ（私は学生の頃からノートを作るのが苦手で、私のメモは広告やコピーの裏側に書いたゴミのようなものですが捨てないで取って置いたのが結構あります）に書いてあった単語でまだ記憶していない "titular" を取り上げます。　この単語は、日本アジア協会(ASJ)が月に一度専門家を招いて会員にレクチャーをしているのですが、何年か前に聴いたレクチャーで書き留めたものです。私のメモに書かれている文は次ぎの通りです。

私のメモにはそれだけしか書かれていませんでしたが、ASJのサイトには過去の記録がありDr. Vivek Pintoが "Justice Radhabinod Pal and the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal: A Retrospective of his Historic Dissent" と題して話したレクチャーにあった事が分かりました。レクチャーの概要へのリンクを付けて置きましたので興味のある方はそちらを読んで下さい。
someone who is the official leader or ruler of a country but who does not have real power or authorityとなっていました。日本の天皇を表すにはぴったりの単語ですね。
