nee Adamas

先日Asiatic Society of Japan（以下ASJ）が毎年発行しているThe Transactions of the ASJのSUPPLEMENTを頂きました。この増補はLife and Learningと題されていて主にASJの理事やOB（Donald Richie, Donald Keene, etc.）がそれそれのLife and Learningの経験について書いたもので非常に興味が湧く内容のものです。

"We would like to ask contributors to write on how their lives and their learning have interacted (with some connection to Asia); perhas how their leaning has influenced their lives or how their lives have influenced ther learning, or how a certain moment or experience drew them into what became a subject of lifelong study."

まだほん一部しか読んでいませんが、最初に読んだのは面識のある方の寄稿で最後に寄稿者の略歴が書かれており、名前のあとに括弧書きで "(nee Yamamoto)" とありました。neeの真ん中のe にはアクセントマークがついていましたので元々は英語では無い事が推測されます。　辞書で調べると旧姓を示すフランス語から来た言葉であることが分かりました。 通常会話では maiden name　と言うところを文語では Mrs. Jones, nee Adams と（多分格調高く）書くのでしょう。
