Today, I'd like to introduce one of fun facts in this English Plus blog.
As an instructor at an English language school, I personally read several books, magazines, newspapers, and check websites in order to get some information.
When I read them, I sometimes find some interesting and surprising fun facts.
It's because our students talk about a wide variety of topics during lessons, so in order to catch up with them, I need to get some information.
Today, I would like to introduce one of fun facts that I got to know recently.
Today's one is...
"Bird poop is white because they don't pee. Instead of producing urine, birds excrete a white paste."
I wonder if you have ever seen birds pee in your life...at least I've never seen one.
Anyway, English Plus is a small English language school located in Shibaura, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
We have students from elementary school to adults who are already retired.
A lot of varieties of students are enjoying learning English here.

Today's one is...
"Canada has around 3 million lakes. That's more than the rest of the world's lakes combined."
After I found out this fact, I checked if this information is true by checking Google map.
Since I lived in Toronto, Canada before, I know that there is a big lake named "Lake Ontario."
However, I didn't know there are so many lakes in Canada.
If you are into this fact, please check Google map by yourself.

"The most common adjective in the English language is "good" and the most common noun is "time."
In fact during our lessons here at English Plus, our students use these two vocabulary words "good" and "time" quite often.
Therefore, there is no wonder why native English speakers use them more often.
When you have a chance, please check the fact by listening to English speakers' conversation.

"The word "Happy" is used three times more often in English than "sad.”
Through my personal experience, I actually ask our students "How are you?" and they say "I'm happy" more often than "I'm sad."

Today's one is...
"manspreading"
In my opinion, this is the word that we can't easily translate into Japanese.
When you see a person on the train or bus, think about the word "manspreading" in your mind.

おはようございます。東京都港区田町芝浦の英語学校English Plus英語講師のarataです。

本日のブログは“【仰向けの時はげっぷができない】英語でも日本語でも伝えたい最近の驚きの事実・雑学の紹介（日本語編）”です。

English Plusのレッスン（特に大人向けの英会話のレッスン）の中では、レッスン受講生が英語で様々なトピックについて会話をします。

レッスンの中では話すためのトピックをこちらで予め用意してあるのですが、レッスン受講生同士の会話では時に用意したトピックから外れて色々なことについて話していることがあります。

そのようなレッスンの環境ということもあり、Englsih Plusで英語を教える立場の講師として、レッスンのために最近の情報収集（ウェブなど）や本、新聞、雑誌などにも目を通すようにしています。

情報に触れる中で、面白いな、驚きの事実だな、と感じるものが色々とありますので少しずつですが「英語でも日本語でも伝えたい最近の驚きの事実・雑学の紹介」としてこのブログで紹介していきたいと思います。

今日の驚きの事実・雑学は【仰向けの時はげっぷができない】です。

英語で言うと"You can't burp when you are lying on your back."となります。

"You can't sneeze with your eyes open."
After I found out this fact, I tried to sneeze with my eyes open; however, of course, I couldn't make it.
Also, when I checked people around me sneeze, they closed their eyes naturally.
When you have a chance, please check the fact.
By the way, when you hear someone sneeze, you know what to say.
It's "Bless you."

How's it going?
Today, I'd like to write about the cultural differences about alcohol between Canada and Japan.

After starting living in Canada in 2003, the first surprising thing was about alcohol.
Actually, there were three surprising facts…
1. Before I left for Canada, I had an idea that “Drinking outside in Canada is okay like Japan”; however, it turned out that it is illegal to drink alcohol outside!
FYI: If you were caught drinking outside, you would get in serious trouble, so do not drink outside!!
2. Actually, not only the fact that drinking outside is illegal, but also at a bar where we have to pay cash on delivery, we need to pay tip each time!
It means that if you buy beer at the bar, you need to pay extra.
3. If you want to drink at home, of course you can, however, the place you can buy alcohol is limited!!
You can’t buy alcohol anywhere!! In Toronto, the places I know we can buy alcohol are "LCBO" & "The Beer Store."
Their store time is limited and before holiday season, they close earlier than regular hours so if you have plans to throw a party on a long holiday, you should prepare beforehand!!
If you have a chance to enjoy alcohol in Toronto, Canada, please keep these in mind and enjoy!!

本日は“英語講師の留学経験（カナダでお酒を飲む時のルール編）“です。

２００３年にカナダで生活し始めた時、一番最初に驚いたことは“お酒・アルコール”に関することでした。

特に次の３点が日本とは違う、と感じた点でした。

1. カナダに旅立つ前までは“日本のように公園などの公共の外の場所で、お酒を飲むことは全く問題ない”と思っていましたが、カナダに来て驚いたことに、外でアルコールを飲むことは違法だという点。
（＊アルコールを公共の場（外）で飲んだ際、警察につかまると大変なことになるので注意！！）

２．一回、一回お酒を頼んだ際に支払うシステムのバー（cash on delivery）では毎回の注文の度にチップを支払う必要がある、という点。

３．家でゆっくりとお酒を楽しみたい、パーティーをしたい方はもちろん可能です。が、アルコールを購入できる場所は限られており、自分の知る限りでは“LCBO” と“The Beer Store”というお店のみです。
注意点としましては、連休などはお休みになることが多いので、連休前など早めに購入することをおすすめします。

こんな感じのカナダ・トロントのお酒事情ですが、日本とまた違ったビールやアルコールを試すこともできますのでチャンスがあれば是非！！

It's only about a month until Christmas, and today, I'd like to introduce a good English book for Christmas season.

The book I'd like to recommend today is...
"How Santa Really Works"
(written by Alan Snow, published by Aladdin paperbacks)
This book is intended basically for kids, however, it can be enjoyed with adults because this book reveals "everything about Santa!!"
For example..."Where Santa lives, How Santa knows what you want, and so on."
After you read this book, I'm pretty sure you want to tell some facts about Santa to your friends!!
The English used in the book is not too difficult, so why don't you give it a try?

今日は、クリスマスまで１ヶ月をきったこの時期におすすめの一冊を紹介したいと思います。

今日おすすめする本は・・・
"How Santa Really Works" です。
(著者： Alan Snow　出版社： Aladdin paperbacks)

この"How Santa Really Works" という本は、子供向けの本ですが、大人でも十分に楽しめる内容になっています。

なぜなら、この本では“サンタのすべて”についてわかりやすい英語で学べるからです。
（例：“サンタはどこに住んでいるのか？”や“サンタはどのように一人一人の子供の欲しい物を知るのか？”などです）

この本を読んだ後、友達に“サンタのことを伝えたくなること”間違いなしです！

英語も比較的、平易な点＋絵も描かれている、ので手に取りやすいと思います。
