日本語独特の表現“猫舌”を英語で言ってみよう

Good morning and thank you for reading English Plus blog.
Today, let’s try to say a Japanese expression in English!
Today's expression is a very unique Japanese one - "Nekojita."
The other day, one of my students ordered tea and tried to take a sip, but suddenly said "I have cat tongue (= nekojita) and can't drink hot tea."
Direct translated word "cat tongue" is not a really English expression so today let's see how to say "Nekojita."
Nekojita is..."sensitive tongue."
When you make a sentence, you can say, "I have a sensitive tongue." or "My tongue is sensitive to heat."
When you have a chance to talk about "nekojita", please try "sensitive tongue!"

本日は“日本語独特の表現“猫舌”を英語で言ってみよう”です。

先日、お一人の生徒の方がEnglish Plusでお茶をしながら英語の自習をしていた時、突然“熱っ”という声が聞こえました。

スタッフが大丈夫か確認したところ、“猫舌で熱いと飲めない”と言うことを英語で言っていました。

ちなみにその時のやり取り（英語）ではこんな感じでした。

"Are you okay?"

"I'm ok, but I have cat tongue and can't drink hot tea."

猫舌は日本語独特の表現で英語に該当する表現がなく、直訳"cat tongue"と言っても英語では通じませんので注意が必要です。

英語で言うならば…"sensitive tongue"に該当するでしょうか。

文章で使うと…"I have a sensitive tongue." や "My tongue is sensitive to heat."という感じになります。

猫舌の方は覚えておいて損はないと思います。

覚えておいて、使ってみましょう！

英語スピーキング力アップのためのアドバイス

Good morning and thank you for checking out English Plus blog!
Today, I'd like to give you advice to improve speaking skill.
I sometimes hear some students or customers at English Plus cafe say "I wish I could speak English."
There is no easy way to improve speaking skill, but at least I can give you some advice to help you improve speaking skill.
1. Don't worry about making mistakes because we will make mistakes!
2. Be patient with yourself! I know you feel frustration that you can't say what you really want to say, but be patient! Just try, try, try!
3. Try to speak English with people around you whenever possible! Talk to your friends who are also learning English! Any topics are fine! Just choose anything you find around you!
4. Read any English books! When you read, make sure you read out loud!
If you have time to wonder what you should, just try to speak English!

確かに英語を話すこと、すなわち英語スピーキング力をつけるのは簡単ではないのですが、今日は英語スピーキング力アップのためのアドバイスをいくつかしたいと思います。

１．間違いを恐れないこと、誰でも間違えます！

２．英語スピーキング力アップは辛抱強く！言いたいことが口から出ないことはフラストレーションがたまりますが、辛抱です。たくさん話して少しずつスピーキング力を伸ばしましょう！

３．可能な限り周りの人と英語で話しましょう！（英語を学んでいる人なら尚更良いです！）会話のトピックは何でも可能で、周りの目についたものについて話してみましょう！

４．英語の本を読みましょう！読むときは出来るだけ、声に出して読みましょう！

スピーキング力アップのために何をすれば良いのか迷われたなら、上記の中から出来ることから即実行していきましょう！

東京ゲートブリッジに行ってきました＆橋について英語で学ぼう

Today, I'd like to write about bridges.
Last Sunday was my day off and it was a great sunny day!
So, my family and I went for a drive to Tokyo Gate Bridge for the first time.
The bridge was much bigger than I expected and it's located near Haneda airport, so we could see a lot of airplanes flying over us.
Also, we could see Tokyo Sky Tree, Tokyo Disneyland and so on from there.
The weather was so nice that it was a great day to hang out outside!
As you might notice that the shape of the Tokyo Gate Bridge is interesting.
This kind of bridge is called...
・Truss bridge
Other kinds of bridges are for example...
・Cable-stayed bridge (e.g. Yokohama Bay Bridge)
・Suspension bridge (e.g. Rainbow Bridge)
・Arch bridge (e.g. Nagasaki Megane Bridge)

Tokyo Gate Bridge - 東京ゲートブリッジ

本日は“東京ゲートブリッジに行ってきました＆橋について英語で学ぼう”です。

先週の日曜日はお休みの日＋天気が良かったので、家族と一緒に初めて東京ゲートブリッジへ行ってきました。

東京ゲートブリッジは想像以上に大きく、羽田空港に近いという立地から頭上を通過していく飛行機をたくさん見ることが可能です。

またその他にも東京スカイツリーや東京ディズニーランドなども見ることができます。

天気が良かったこともあり、外に出るのにとても良い日でリフレッシュすることができました。

東京ゲートブリッジを見ると面白い形にお気づきになるかと思いますが、このような橋の形を英語では…

・Truss bridgeと言い、他の橋は例えば…

・Cable-stayed bridge (斜張橋 - 例：横浜ベイブリッジ)

・Suspension bridge (吊り橋 - e.g. レインボーブリッジ)

・Arch bridge (アーチ橋 - e.g. 長崎メガネ橋)

などがあります。

英語で大学の学年を表現してみる

Good morning and thank you for visiting English Plus blog!
Today, let’s learn some English!
There are various students studying at our English school.
Some people are office workers, some are students and so on.
One time during lesson, my students introduced each other and they asked their names, occupations and so forth.
One student wanted to tell the others his/her occupation but didn't know the specific vocabulary.
So, today let's practice the vocabulary together!
When we want to talk about the grade at university, we can say...
・Freshman
・Sophomore
・Junior
・Senior
and after graduating from a university, some people might go to...
・graduate school
When you have a chance to talk about university, let's use them!

本日は“英語で大学の学年を表現してみる”です。

English Plusに通って下さる生徒の方々は様々で会社員・学生の方など、色々な方に通っていただいています。

先日、レッスンの中で生徒の方同士で英語で自己紹介してもらい、名前や職業などをお互いに聞きあっていました。

その時、お一人の方がご自身の職業を伝えたかったようなのですが、それを表現する英語が、日本人にはなかなか馴染みのない英語だった、という事があったので、今日は“大学の学年”を表現する時に使える英語を紹介したいと思います。

大学の学年を伝える時は…

・Freshman（大学１年生）

・Sophomore（大学２年生）

・Junior（大学３年生）

・Senior（大学４年生）

なお、大学院は“graduate school”という英語になります。

大学に関して話すことがあれば使ってみましょう！

About 2 months ago, an idol group "Kawasaki Junjo Komachi (KJK)" visited our place to make our promotional movie.
The promotional movie shooting was good and I was waiting for the movie to arrive.
The other day, I received the complete version of the movie and I was impressed how well it was made and edited.
However, at the same time I feel I was so nervous that I don't think this promotional movie is not promoting English Plus...

日本語独特の表現“いただきます＆ごちそうさまでした”を英語で言ってみよう

Good morning and I appreciate your visit to English Plus blog.
Today, let’s try to say some Japanese expressions in English!
Today's expressions I'd like to pick up are the ones that we usually use before & after eating in Japan - "Itadakimasu & Gochisousamadeshita."
Why I'm picking up these expressions is because at our cafe, customers often ask us "What do you say Itadakimasu?" in English.
We can't answer this question easily since there are no exact translated English expressions for Itadakimasu & Gochisousamadeshita, which are not commonly used in English speaking countries.
However, let's see...
"Itadakimasu"
・Let's eat!
・Let's dig in.
・Shall we start eating?
・Shall we eat?
"Gochisousamadeshita"
・Thank you for the wonderful meal!
・The meal was great!
・I really enjoyed the meal!
・I can't eat any more!
・I'm satisfied. Thanks!
・It was delicious!
If you really want to say "Itadakimasu & Gochisousamadeshita", please try to use them!

本日は“日本語独特の表現“いただきます＆ごちそうさまでした”を英語で言ってみよう”です。

English Plusカフェにランチで来られるお客様に聞かれる質問で多いのが、“いただきます・ごちそうさまは英語で何て言うの？”という質問です。

英語では“いただきます・ごちそうさまでした”に該当する表現がないため返答に困るのですが、あえて英語で…と言うのであれば以下の表現が使えます。

“いただきます”

・Let's eat!

・Let's dig in.

・Shall we start eating?

・Shall we eat?

“ごちそうさまでした”

・Thank you for the wonderful meal!

・The meal was great!

・I really enjoyed the meal!

・I'm full. I can't eat any more!

・I'm satisfied. Thanks!

・It was delicious!

“いただきます”“ごちそうさまでした”を英語で言いたい！という時に使ってみましょう。

ビジネスでも使える英語の敬語表現

Today, let's learn some polite English that can be used in business.
In most business situations, I think we should use polite English.
So, today let's learn and practice some polite ways to say in each situation below.
For example...
・When you want someone to pass you a pen, you can say "Pass me the pen."
However, in a polite way, you can say... "Could you please pass me the pen?"
・When you are busy and someone ask you something, you can say "Wait a minute."
However, in a polite way, you can say... "Could you give me a minute?"
・When someone asks you something, you can say "NO."
However, in a polite way, you can say... "I'm afraid I can't."
・When you are on the plane and a flight attendant asks you your preference of a meal, you can say "I want fish."
However, in a polite way, you can say... "I would like fish, please. "
・When you are on the phone, you can say... "Wait a minute."
However in a polite way, you can say... "Can you hold please?"
Let's try to use polite English!

本日は“ビジネスでも使える英語の敬語表現”です。

英語では敬語がないと思われがちですが、実は様々な敬語の表現があり、特に英語でのビジネスの状況では適切な敬語を使うほうが賢明です。

今日はいくつかのビジネスの状況での敬語の使い方を取り上げたいと思います。

例えば…

・近くの人にペンを取ってもらいたい場合、"Pass me the pen."と言えますが、敬語の表現であれば…"Could you please pass me the pen?"

・忙しい時に話しかけられた場合、"Wait a minute."でも大丈夫ですが、敬語の表現ですと…"Could you give me a minute?"

・何かを尋ねられ断りたい場合、"NO."でも良いのですが、敬語の表現ならば…"I'm afraid I can't."

・飛行機の中で食事の選択ができる場合、"I want fish."でも大丈夫ですが、敬語の表現ですと…"I would like fish, please. "

・電話応対のひとことで、相手にお待ちいただくことを伝える時、"Wait a minute."も使えますが、敬語の表現では"Could you hold please?"

ビジネスの状況であれば、できるだけ敬語を使っていきましょう！
