米オンライン科学誌「プロス・ワン」の報道によると、スペインの王朝（1516～1700年）で権勢を誇ったハプスブルク家の断絶の理由は、繰り返された近親婚によって発症した遺伝子疾患だった。ハプスブルク朝に幕を引いたカルロス2世（1661～1700年）は、小柄で内臓疾患であったが、今回の研究で下垂体ホルモン欠乏症と遠位尿細管性アシドーシスが原因だと推測された。同王朝の結婚11例中9例は近親婚で、「近親交配係数」は初代カルロス1世の父親の0．025から始まり、カルロス2世では10倍の0．254に達している。
