東京都の石原慎太郎知事（８０）は２５日午後に記者会見を開き、自らを党首とする新党を結成することを発表する。

次期衆院選で民主、自民両党に対抗する第３極勢力の結集を視野に、大阪市の橋下徹市長が代表を務める新党「日本維新の会」との連携などを目指す。
新党には、たちあがれ日本の平沼代表や園田幹事長ら同党の衆参国会議員５人が参加する見通し。石原氏はこれまで、知事と党首の両立には否定的な見解を示しており、記者会見では、知事退任の時期についても言及する可能性がある。
石原氏は新党結成に向けて平沼代表らと協議を続けていたが、新党構想の具体案が報じられたことに不快感を示し、今年４月に構想を白紙に戻すと宣言。同月、尖閣諸島（沖縄県石垣市）を都が購入する計画を発表し、その後は購入計画に専念していた。
