Are the definitions clear? Do you need the dictionary to look up the words used in the definition (e.g. dog as 'carnivorous quadruped...')?
"quadruped" は初めて見る単語ですが、"quad" があるので４に関係しているはずなので文脈からして四足の動物の意味だと思いますが辞書を見ます。

ところで犬は "carnivore" ではなく人間と同じで "omnivore" だと思いましたが、"dog" を辞書で見てみます。

辞書の定義では確かに肉食（"carnivore"）となっていますね。 でも納得がいかないのでWikipedia を見ると、dogsのDietの項にこう書いてありました。
Despite its descent from wolves, the domestic dog is an omnivore, though it is classified in the order Carnivora.
やはり正しくは "omnivorous mammal"、"omnivore" ですね。

"crack" には割れ目の意味もあるので "open a crack" は「少し開けておく」の意味と思いますが辞書で確認します。

東京駅前のBook Centerは年に２度程在庫処分として洋書の安売りをしますが、大分前にその安売りで買った５百円の本 "The English Language" をやっと読み始めました。 ぱらぱらと見た感じではタイトルの割りには余り硬い本ではなかったので買ったものです。 著者のDavid Crystalは（現在はどうか知りませんが、本のカバーによると） "presenter of BBC Radio 4's English Now" だそうです。
覚えておきたいと最初に思った単語は "yomp" で、次ぎの文にありました。

I have a friend I love to death, but she has a habit of talking too much. She yaks nonstop, and I can't get a word in edgewise.
"edgewise" は「端に沿って」の様な意味だと思いますが、 "get a word in edgewise" は慣用句で文脈からして「口を挟む」と言うような意味になるようですが、辞書で確かめます。

"edgewise" に「かろうじて」の意味がある事から "get a word in edgewise" が「やっと口を挟む」表現が良く使われるようになったようです。

英語でマーケティングを勉強している"BizCom" の先週の例会後の懇親会で仲間のＫＴさんがサクランボの実に付いている柄の部分の名称は何かという話がでました。（ＫＴさんは旅行会社の繁忙期にたまに添乗員を頼まれるそうです） 葉の同様な部分は葉柄と言う様な記憶がありますが、実柄は聞いた事がありません。 英語だったら何と言うとの話にもなったのですが、"stem" とか "stalk" 位しか出てきません。 植物好きの私としては気になっていたのですが、インターネットでも調べようがありません。
ところが昨夜寝る前に本棚を見ると、昔米国で買ってその後ほとんど中を見たことがない英絵辞典(Visual Dictionary）を持っていることに気が付きました。早速、Vegetable Kingdomのページを見てみるとありました！Blue berryの絵に柄が付いていて "pedicel" とありました。 次に "pedicel" を英英辞書で確認しました。
