latrine and commode

Evolootionと題されたThe History of the Lowly Toiletの記事がReader's Digest 9月号にありました。 Evolution のスペルをわざと間違えているのに気がつきましたか。 トイレに関するトピックは何度もこのブログでも取り上げた事があります。（参照下記ＵＲＬ）

西洋の立派で綺麗な便器付きの椅子の写真が付いているので "latrine" も "commode" もトイレに関係する単語に違いありませんが辞書で確認します。
まずは "latrine" から、
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: a toilet outside, for example in a military camp
・Macmillan Dictionary: a receptacle (as a pit in the earth) for use as a toilet; Where's the nearest latrine, soldier?
次は "commode" の意味です。
・COED:
1 a piece of furniture containing a concealed chamber pot

2 a chest of drawers or chiffonier of a decorative type popular in the 18th century
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary:
a seat with a container below it, used as a toilet
a.American old-fashioned a toilet
b.old-fashioned a piece of furniture consisting of a set of drawers
"commode" は必ずしも便器とは限らないようですね。
