ping

昨夜卓球の練習から家に帰ると月下美人（Queen of the Night）の花が咲いていました。花がないと余り綺麗とは言えない植物ですが花は大きくて本当に見事です。
さて、Reader's Digest　3月号の "How to change your mind" と題された記事の一文です。
The root of the problem is that we're designed to respond to changes in our environment, so every ping of an email gets our attention.
もう何年も前になりますがマイクロソフトのサーバーOSのアプリケーションソフトを販売する関係上マイクロソフトのMCP for WindowsNTと言う資格を取りました。当時（その前から知っていましたが）Internet Protocolをチェックするユーティリティの "ping" はエンジニア必須の専門用語でした。
Ping is a computer network administration utility used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an Internet Protocol (IP) network and to measure the round-trip time for packets sent from the local host to a destination computer, including the local host's own interfaces.（Wikipediaからの抜粋）
しかし、上記RDの文中の "ping" はそんな専門的なユーティリティを使っているのではなく単にemailを送信しているだけの様です。　そのような意味・用法が辞書に掲載されているかチェックします。

記事と同じような用例がありましたね。インターネットの普及で "ping" も一般用語にもなったようです。
