On Aug. 4, 2024, KBS in S. Korea reported that "local media reported that the Berlin mayor (* Kai Wegner), who expressed his opposition to the preservation of the [Statue of Peace], a symbol of the (* fake) victims of Japanese forces' comfort women in Berlin, Germany, has pressured to reduce its support budget for the German-based civic organization [Korea Verband], which installed the statue."

On Aug. 3 (local time), local German media reported as a story of an anonymous source that "The Berlin mayor has requested member(s) of the advisory committee, that reviews whether or not to support cultural & educational projects, to reduce the human rights education budget for Korea Verband, citing the reason that [it could conflict with Tokyo]."
Korea Verband applied for 87,000 euros (approx. \13.63 million) support fund and passed the 1st round of screening by a panel of arts and education committees. However, in April, the advisory committee, which is made up of members from inside and outside the Berlin city, rejected that.

"Korea Verband," which erected the statue of girl in Berlin in 2020, provided human rights education to children in the Berlin area since the following year under the name of "sit next to me" covering sexual violence in general, including wartime sexual crimes.
Supported from the Berlin city every year, it educated about 300 persons so far. However, the budget was reduced this year and the project was suspended in May.
A Berlin city official explained that "The project fund is decided by majority vote, and the committee is not open to the public" and allegedly said that "It's impossible to comment on or evaluate the committee's decisions."
