A LEAK from the diaries of a former royal confidant suggests
that Emperor Hirohito, who ruled Japan during and after World
War II, disapproved of the Yasukuni war shrine and refused to
visit it.
The war shrine in Tokyo and the official visits made to it by
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi are now at the centre of an
acrimonious rift between Japan and its Asian neighbours.
